Whitburn boss pays tribute to unsung heroes after club's East of Scotland Conference X title success

Whitburn boss Darren Wilson hailed the club's unsung heroes after watching his side crowned East of Scotland Conference X champions.

The Burnie sensationally smashed a dozen past Fauldhouse United in a final day 12-0 victory at Park View to pip Syngenta to the title on goal difference as they ended their first year in senior football in style.

Whitburn entered the weekend level on points with the Dyes but trailing by a single goal. With Syngenta hosting Pumpherston it was likely only a significant win for the Burnie would see them finish the season at the top of the pile.

And while Syngenta picked up a 7-0 win, that proved to be not enough with the Burnie’s perfect dozen ensuring the trophy was heading to West Lothian.

He added: “Moments like this aren’t just about the players and the club.

“My wife has to make huge sacrifices to allow me to do this job and have that time away from her and our two kids. Everyone at this club has people around them who make sacrifices and give up their time.

“They put in just as much time and effort and we all see that. Hopefully this will be a way of repaying and thanking them all.”

He added: “I said last week that we’d play six up front and see how it went and that’s what we did.

“The full-backs were wingers and Andy Thomson was really playing as a second central striker when we had the ball.

“We said before the game that we needed to go at it from the first minute and just keep going. We told them to go and attack and score as many goals as we can and then we’ll just need to see where that takes us and we did it.

“We had to keep going all season. Syngenta, Bo’ness Athletic and Armadale Thistle have all made it a hugely challenging and entertaining promotion race. But we know our guys just will never give up.

“We’ve been pushed all the way and I’m just delighted we’ve been able to finish it off by winning the league.”
