Whisky spillage sparks large-scale emergency response at Ayrshire factory

Emergency service crews helped clean up a whisky spillage in Ayrshire today.

Loch Lomond Group's maturation site in Hurlford was subject to a huge response from police, fire crews and ambulances from 11am.

Despite dozens of emergency vehicles descending on the Ayrshire factory, the boss of the company admits it was just a "small incident" at the Mauchline Road premises and confirmed the liquid spilled was whisky.

Tony Brewerton, Loch Lomond Group operations director, told Ayrshire Live: "As part of our day-to-day operations when he have a small incident, and it was a very small incident, where a barrel has either been dropped or has leaked we have a process that we go through.

"The process that we went through this morning after a dropped barrel has yielded a response from emergency services.

"It's all been part of a process, there was no one injured. There was a small amount of liquid on the ground that was contained in the area which it took place.

"The liquid is now being removed and it's all back to normal, it's one of these bizarre things that on a standard day's work it would happen and we'd follow our processes and nothing would come of it.

"But today there's been a response from the services, that was very impressive, but unfortunately not needed."

A Scottish Fire Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11am on Thursday, October 6 to Mauchline Road, Hurlford after a report of a spillage involving potentially hazardous materials.

“Operations control mobilised three fire appliances and a specialist unit to the scene where firefighters were working to make the area safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We received a call at 11.12am this morning to attend an incident in Mauchline Road. We dispatched five resources to the scene.”
