Which UK supermarkets have cut prices to tackle cost of living – and what's been reduced?

Food bills have been rising causing more strain on millions of households dealing with the cost of living crisis.

With rising inflation as well as supply chain issues caused by Brexit and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the price for food and non-alcoholic drinks have been soaring, hitting the highest 12-month rate since September 2011 this March.

The mounting costs have meant that British shoppers are choosing supermarket-label products instead of branded products to keep costs down, according to research from NielsenIQ.

Two supermarkets have now come forward to offer customers some help in the form of reduced prices. Here’s everything you need to know about which supermarkets are lowering prices and which items have been reduced.

Asda and Morrisons have announced that they will be reducing the prices of several items in their stores.

Of the big four supermarkets - Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda - both of the latter are seen as being on the bottom end of price ranges. So far, Tesco and Sainsbury's haven't made any announcements about price cuts to products.

Asda

Asda's move comes alongside the supermarket group’s pledge to increase hourly rates for staff to £10.10 from July.

It also follows the supermarket chain's decision to axe its Smart Price range and replace it with Just Essentials by Asda products, which has broader range.

The decision to cut prices comes after research from the chain revealed that nine in 10 customers are worried about the pressure of inflation on their budgets.

Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda, said: "We know that household budgets are being squeezed by an increasing cost of living and we are committed to doing everything we can to support our customers, colleagues and communities in these exceptionally tough times."

Adding that the supermarket chain is aiming to give families stability in their weekly shopping "by lowering and locking over 100 prices until the end of the year."

Morrisons

Morrisons has also made a similar announcement to Asda, offering a 13% price cut on more than 500 products, which is around 6% of the total sales volume.

The price cuts cover refrigerated, frozen and store cupboard food, meat and cereal at the store.

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: "We know that our customers are under real financial pressure at the moment and we want to play our part in helping them when it comes to the cost of grocery shopping.

"These price cuts will have a noticeable and long term impact on our customers’ budgets and demonstrate our commitment to offering them the best possible value."

At Asda, the price of over 100 grocery staples, including tea bags, rice and cheese have been reduced. Prices of other items like cupboard essentials, fridge staples and frozen foods, on products like eggs and baked beans have also been slashed.

The average reduction of prices will be by 12% at Asda, with a 25% slash in the price of a bag of Asda easy cook rice, which will cost 75p now.

At Morrisons, which is the UK's fourth-largest supermarket, items like a 30-pack of own-brand eggs have been reduced from £3.40 to £2.99, a 430g pack of Morrisons British diced beef will cost £3.59 rather than £3.99, a 33-pack of Nutmeg-brand nappies is down from £1.4o to £1.29 and a pack of four Morrisons beef burgers can be bought for £3.49 instead of £4.

The supermarket will also cut the price of a quarter own-brand products including Morrisons Savers, Morrisons Wonky in produce as well as Morrisons Essentials in homeware and health and beauty.
