Which TV dramas could return in Autumn 2022?

This has been an exciting year for TV releases already, but there are still plenty of big shows coming to the BBC, Amazon, and Netflix in the next few months. Drama fans, in particular, could have a lot to look forward to.

Early in the year, we saw the likes of Ozark (starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney), Apple TV+ show Severence (starring Adam Scott, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken) and BBC shows like The Responder, Peaky Blinders, and This Is Going To Hurt become big hits with fans.

Now we're into August, some big-budget fantasy drama series are starting to emerge, chief amongst which is the Game Of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon. The Game of Thrones prequel series is set two centuries before the events of the original show and focuses on the Targaryen civil war, starring Emma D'Arcy and Matt Smith.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will follow soon. The new Lord of the Rings series will take place long before the events of Peter Jackson's beloved films - even before the story of The Hobbit - and will star Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, and Lenny Henry, amongst many others.

While HOTD and LOTR are both being released soon, there is still plenty of TV drama to come in 2022, with some big shows both confirmed and rumoured to be coming before the end of the year.

Gangs of London (Series 2)

NOW TV and Sky Atlantic will be getting the second instalment of the crime drama Gangs of London in 2022, potentially as soon as this Autumn. Director Corin Hardy has promised an exciting and violent return, telling Empire: "Blood is such an important colour to use in the canvas of action. You get this immediate reaction when you see it."

The cast for season two will include Sope Dirisu, Michelle Fairley, and Brian Vernel.

The Crown (Series 5)

The new series of Netflix's royal drama will be released sometime in November 2022 and feature Imelda Staunton as the cast lead. It is reported to be the penultimate series for Peter Morgan's royal biopic drama, which will also star Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debicki, and Dominic West.

Jack Ryan (Series 3)

The American action-drama Jack Ryan reportedly finished filming in October last year, and the latest series will see John Krasinski return for the show's third instalment.

No specific release date has been confirmed as of now, but it's rumoured that the show's latest series will hit Prime Video at some point in Autumn 2022.

Happy Valley (Series three)

Though Happy Valley hasn't been on our screens in some time, filming has been confirmed to have wrapped on a third series, and some cast members have teased a release date before the end of the year.

The crime drama (set in Yorkshire) won a BAFTA back when it was first on our screens, and many fans have been excited at the prospect of it returning.

Luther (One-off special)

While fans of Luther may be disappointed to learn that another series is still not currently planned, that does not mean that all has gone quiet for Idris Elba's iconic detective. Following on from five critically-acclaimed BBC series, Netflix is producing a feature film that will continue the story of DCI John Luther.

The film is yet to get an official release date, but Elba himself posted pictures from the set back in November of 2021. It's possible we could see the murder detective return to our screens before the end of the year.
