Will the Washington Commanders trade one of their defensive ends ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline?
While there is a lot of buzz about Washington being sellers at the deadline, ESPN’s John Keim said a fire sale is unlikely.
However, it’s become increasingly clear the Commanders will likely trade at least one of Montez Sweat or Chase Young. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports was the latest to confirm one of Washington’s defensive linemen would be dealt.
Rumors about interested teams are one thing. The truth is, several teams have likely called the Commanders just to check the price of Young, Sweat and others, such as Jonathan Allen. Allen isn’t going anywhere.
Last week, Nicki Jhabvala confirmed that one NFL team had an offer on the table for Sweat. It’s not known who made the offer or what the offer was, but Ben Standig of The Athletic had some details on Monday.
Standig said one team had offered the Commanders a third-round pick for Sweat that would turn into a second-round pick if Sweat signed an extension. While Sweat is a terrific player, if that deal is legit, Washington should take it. If the Commanders aren’t planning on re-signing both edge rushers, then trading one now for an early day-two pick is good business.
Washington could still use the franchise tag on Young.
And while Standig didn’t say where the offer was from, he did confirm interest from the Atlanta Falcons. Sweat played high school football in Georgia.

The Falcons are among the teams interested in Sweat, who grew up near Atlanta. Tuesday's 4 pm deadline should spur activity. https://t.co/3izO43eyAh

There is also a lot of smoke around Sweat and the San Francisco 49ers, but nothing substantial that indicates there will be a deal between the two sides. However, San Francisco GM John Lynch is known to be aggressive.
As it gets closer to the deadline, it becomes more apparent that Sweat’s time in Washington will soon be coming to an end.
