Where you can get a cheap lateral flow test as hospitalisations in Scotland rise

Covid-19 hospitalisations are on the rise again across the UK.

According to the latest report from Public Health Scotland (PHS), on average 1,770 patients in hospital had a positive Covid-19 test in the week ending July 17. This is a six percent increase from the previous week.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) data has said that around 1 in 16 Scots tested positive for coronavirus last week, which equates to around 334,000 people.

With the most recent variants, BA.4 and BA.5, spreading quickly many Scots will want to get a hold of some lateral flow tests to protect themselves and those around them from the virus.

However, the tests are no longer free despite the current surge, meaning most Scots will have to get them from the high street.

So, here are some cost effective lateral flow options that have been price-checked by consumer experts at Which? to make sure that you don't overspend amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Single or multipack?

You may be wondering if you are better off getting a single Covid-19 lateral flow test or a multi pack.

According to the consumer experts, single test kits will typically cost around £2 and can be picked up from popular stores like Tescos.

You may be able to make a saving on a multipack however, which can range from just 10p to 80p, often clocking in at around £6-£10 for five.

Lateral flow tests do have an expiry date, so if you are planning to buy a pack it is worth keeping in mind that your tests could become ineffective and may provide incorrect readings if expired.

Cheapest Covid-19 test options

The consumer experts at Which? have compiled a list of the most cost-effective lateral flow tests which you can pick up on the high street.

They are as follows:

  • Wondfo 2019-nCoV antigen tests: 5 for £6 (£1.20 each), available at Asda
  • Step Ahead Covid-19 lateral flow tests: 5 for £9 (£1.80 each), available at Lloyd's Pharmacy
  • Boson Covid-19 lateral flow tests: 5 for £9.29 (£1.90 each), available at Well Pharmacy
  • FlowFlex lateral flow tests: 5 for £9.59 (£1.92 each), available at Superdrug
  • FlowFlex lateral flow tests: 5 for £9.80 (£1.96 each), available at Boots

Eligibility for free lateral flow tests

According to Government guidance, in Scotland, you can get free rapid lateral flow tests, but only if you are part of an eligible group.

Currently, these groups are:

  • those eligible for Covid-19 treatments
  • those visiting a care home or hospital
  • an unpaid carer
