Where was ITV's Hunt for Raoul Moat filmed? Locations for three part true crime drama

Millions of viewers tuned into ITV on Sunday night, when The Hunt for Raoul Moat begins its three night run on primetime TV.

Nearly 13 years on from former Moat killing Christopher Brown, shooting and injuring ex Samantha Stobbart and firing at and blinding PC David Rathband, before heading to Northumberland and him then turning a gun on himself after the week long man hunt ended in a tense stand-off; the events of summer 2010 are being revisited in a three part true crime drama from World Productions, the company who have delivered BBC smash hits like Line of Duty, Bodyguard and Vigil.

The show will air on April 16, 17 and 18 at 9pm on ITV1 and be followed at the same time on Wednesday, April 19 by the Man Hunt documentary that first aired in 2020.

News of The Hunt for Raoul Moat first broke last year, with the cast then spotted filming scenes, including lead actor Matt Stokoe, in the role of Moat, seen recreating the stand-off. However, while the real life stand-off took place in the quiet village of Rothbury, the team behind the series took the decision to shoot most of the drama away from the North East.

Where was ITV's Hunt for Raoul Moat filmed?

While in real life, Moat's shooting spree began in Birtley, before reaching its climax in Rothbury, neither of those places were used for The Hunt for Raoul Moat.

The filming was predominantly done in Yorkshire, aside from a few very obvious scenes that were shot in Newcastle, including the first date that Samantha and Christopher go on down the Quayside and another scene which sees Samantha spot a friend of ex Moat on the door of a Quayside restaurant which was made to look like a restaurant for the purposes of the drama.

Talking about the filming locations and the decision not to use the places where the real life events unfolded, the drama's executive producer Jake Lushington said; "Aside from establishing shots of Newcastle city centre, we filmed in Yorkshire. The housing estate that doubles for Birtley was just outside Bradford.

"Our director Gareth had extensively recced every real location. But we did not want to film in or near the real locations. That included not filming in Rothbury."
