Where was Ghosts filmed? Inside the Button House manor used in the BBC comedy

Forget your traditional haunted house - the spirits in BBC comedy Ghosts are far funnier than they are scary.

The show follows the story of couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who unexpectedly inherit a huge manor, named Button House, in the countryside.

Only, the dream home has fallen into disrepair, not to mention there are ghosts. Ghosts which Alison can see. Neither side is too happy to be sharing their home, but they're stuck together.

The series was actually shot entirely on location - and the manor house itself is very much a real place and not a clever set.

So, is Button House a real place? Well, yes and no. Button House is a fictional name for the real-life manor West Horsley Place, a Grade I listed building in Surrey.

Just like Alison and Mike inherit Button House, in real life one of the building's board of trustees Bamber Gascoigne was surprised when he unexpectedly inherited West Horsley Place in 2014.

All of the Ghosts scenes are filmed throughout the property, which itself is filled with the historic artifacts and furniture that we see in the show - although some extra props are used too of course.

The building's facade and sprawling gardens have also served as a setting for scenes throughout the show.

There are also some nods to the property's history in the Ghosts script.

For example, when Alison is trying to entice a filming crew to use the house, the spirits tell her that Henry VIII visited for an epic lunch.

The former monarch really did come to West Horsley Place; he gifted the home to his cousin and childhood friend Henry Courtenay who thanked him by hosting an epic 35-course lunch for the king.

Unfortunately in later years the King was persuaded into believing that Courtenay was plotting against him, and had him beheaded.

Meanwhile, just like its counterpart on the show, West Horsley Place also doubles up as a wedding venue.

At the moment it's still privately owned - as it has been for 1,000 years - but there are plans to renovate and open the home up to the public. (Although we're not sure how the show's spirits would react to that news!).
