Where Wales' football stars actually ended up playing after transfer deadline day

After plenty of speculation, wheeling, dealing, and soundbites, the transfer window has slammed shut until the new year.

Cardiff City and Swansea City were pretty active during the window, but Wales boss Rob Page might well have been keeping a close eye on developments too.

A first World Cup for 64 years is now exactly 75 days away, and a number of players will be hoping to make their case for inclusion over the coming weeks.

It's a state of affairs that has clearly had a big impact on the transfer window, with a number of Welsh players making moves.

Here's a quick rundown on who ended up where.

Joe Allen - Swansea City

The 32-year-old is still a key man for Wales, and delighted Swansea City fans by sealing a return to his boyhood club 10 years after first departing for Liverpool.

Allen had been offered a new deal at previous club Stoke City, but turned down the chance to extend his stay with the Potters to seal an emotional homecoming.

Ethan Ampadu - Spezia

Another season, another loan for the 21-year-old, who's returning to Serie A after spending last season on loan with Venezia.

Ampadu has made 35 appearances for his country, but hasn't yet broken through at Stamford Bridge. Even so, if he can build on his previous spell in Italy with regular game time at Spezia, it will surely spell good news for Page.

Gareth Bale - Los Angeles FC

Look away Cardiff City fans. After leaving Real Madrid on a free transfer, Bale was understood to be agonisingly close to a move to his hometown club.

However, he has now chosen to make the move stateside, and has already proved something of a hit with the locals, while also suggesting that the MLS could give him the perfect platform to extend his international career beyond the upcoming World Cup.

Chris Gunter - AFC Wimbledon

The first Welshman to reach 100 caps for his country will surely have some part to play in Qatar, although admittedly game time will be limited.

His free transfer to AFC Wimbledon in League Two should hopefully give him regular minutes ahead of the upcoming showpiece.

Wayne Hennessey - Nottingham Forest

The goalkeeper produced an iconic performance in the win over Ukraine, and is set to stay in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest after moving on a free transfer from Burnley.

However, the 35-year-old looks like being second choice behind Dean Henderson under Steve Cooper.

Dan James - Fulham

The winger left Leeds United on a season-long loan, having also been linked with Tottenham and Everton.

The 22-year-old will be hoping he can play himself into a bit of form at Craven Cottage, having scored just four goals for Leeds last season.

James Lawrence - FC Nuremburg

The defender is set to stay in Bundesliga 2, having joined FC Nuremburg on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old's place in Qatar is by no means assured, and he'll be hoping to catch the eye of Page over the coming weeks.

Dylan Levitt - Dundee United

The midfielder ended a 13-year association with Manchester United this summer, returning to Scottish Premiership side Dundee United for an undisclosed fee.

Levitt was voted the fans' player of the season at Tannadice last term on the back of a successful loan spell. He will no doubt be hoping to further enhance his reputation with some more strong showings this season.

Tom Lawrence - Rangers

The 28-year-old hasn't played for Wales since March 2021, and it remains to be seen whether he's a realistic contender for inclusion in Qatar.

Page has dismissed suggestions that his reluctance to pick the midfielder was down to personal reasons, but he doesn't currently seem to be in the frame. He has now joined Rangers after leaving Derby County on a free transfer.

Rabbi Matondo - Rangers

The former Cardiff City product has also arrived at Ibrox, after bringing a three-year stint with German side Schalke to an end.

Matondo has signed for an undisclosed fee, having netted 10 goals in 27 appearances on loan at Cercle Bruges last season.

Aaron Ramsey - Nice

After weeks of speculation, Ramsey was released from his contract at Juventus earlier this summer, leaving him free to find another club.

Ramsey's place in Page's World Cup team is certain, but he will surely benefit from regular football in Ligue 1 as he looks to ensure his sharpness for November's tournament.

Tyler Roberts - Queens Park Rangers

Leeds United striker Roberts made 26 appearances in all competitions last season, but will be hoping to play himself into the international fold after missing out on the camp in June due to injury.

The 23-year-old has joined QPR on a season-long loan, with , with the Hoops holding an option to buy the striker.

Joe Rodon - Rennes

Rodon joins Ramsey out in France as he bids to find regular football ahead of the World Cup.

Like Ramsey, Rodon is likely to be one of the first names on Page's team-sheet this winter. Having struggled for game time at Spurs, he's joined Rennes on a season-long loan, which could yet be made into a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Will Vaulks - Sheffield Wednesday

The midfielder was one of a number of players to leave Cardiff City on a free transfer this summer, and is now looking to force his way back into the Wales reckoning with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 28-year-old is hoping to help the Owls to a promotion push in League One, although he admittedly seems some way down the pecking order.

Neco Williams - Nottingham Forest

Signed by Forest for £17m from Liverpool, Williams is finally getting the chance to play regular Premier League football

The youngster helped Fulham to the Championship title last season, but the arrival of Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsey seemingly further blocked his progress at Anfield.

Ben Woodburn - Preston

Another Liverpool academy product to move on this summer, the 22-year-old has joined Preston after his contract on Merseyside expired.

A regular for Wales as a teenager, injuries have severely hampered his progress. He will be hoping the move to Deepdale will help to resurrect his international hopes.
