Fans of The Princess Diaries will be overjoyed to hear the hotly-anticipated third film has finally been confirmed by Disney, 18 years after the last sequel. While lead star Anne Hathaway hasn't yet been announced to return as Mia Thermopolis, avid 00s enthusiasts will get to find out how the royal princess' life has progressed since her high school days.
The original director Garry Marshall sadly passed away last year and it's unlikely Julie Andrews will make a comeback as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. But it's hopeful Princess Diaries 3 will be just as nostalgic and iconic as the first and second films. Ahead of the release date, we take a look back at the original cast to see where they all are now.
Anne Hathaway
After the role of Mia Thermopolis launched Anne Hathaway's career in Hollywood, the New York native went on to play in The Devil Wears Prada, Bride Wars and Les Miserables.
More recently, the 40-year-old has appeared in Ocean's 8, The Witches, and Armageddon Time.
She's become very involved in charitable causes, such as the Lollipop Theatre Network, and served as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.
In 2012, the actress married actor Adam Shulman and went on to have two sons, Jonathan and Jack, one in 2016 and another in 2019.
Julie Andrews
Before Julie Andrews played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the 2001 Disney classic, the British icon had both an Oscar and five Golden Globes.
The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins star has lent her voice to three out of four Shrek films, Despicable Me (2010), Aquaman (2018) and Bridgerton (2020).
She was recently honoured with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, adding to the 66 awards she's collected over her outstanding career.
Julie has had two marriages in her time and, at the age of 87, is a grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to three.
Heather Matarazzo
Heather Matarazzo is well-known for her role as Mia Thermopolis's best friend, Lilly Moscovitz, though her big break was in 1995's Welcome to the Dollhouse.
She has since starred in Grey's Anatomy, Saved! and Hostel: Part II, and most recently reprised her role as Martha Meeks in Scream (2022).
The 40-year-old actress has dished details about how she felt starring in The Princess Diaries on TikTok (spoiler: she loved how Lilly was self-aware, but had an attitude problem), and opened up about her struggles of working in Hollywood.
Hector Elizondo
Hector Elizondo played Mia's bodyguard Joseph in the iconic film directed by Garry Marshall, and also worked with him on Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride and Overboard.
Best known for his role as Phillip Watters on the medical drama Chicago Hope, he has won two Emmys and also been nominated for a Golden Globe.
In 2010, the 85-year-old reunited with Anne Hathaway in Valentine's Day and more recently played a part on Last Man Standing.
Robert Schwartzman
After starring as Mia's first love, Michael Moscovitz, Robert Schwartzman took to Hollywood as a director.
The Los Angeles native has directed three films, Dreamland (2016), The Unicorn (2018) and The Argument (2020).
Robert is also a successful musician, fronting the rock band Rooney since 1999.
The 39-year-old is married to photographer Zoey Grossman, whom he met in first grade, in 2017.
It is less known that he's the younger brother of famous actor-musician Jason Schwartzman, who recently starred in The French Dispatch (2021).
Mandy Moore
The Princess Diaries was one of Mandy Moore's first acting roles, as she played bully cheerleader Lana, and she went on to voice Rapunzel in Disney's Tangled (2010) and starred in A Walk to Remember (2002) and Love, Wedding, Marriage (2011).
While she starred in family-drama series This Is Us, she scored an Emmy nomination and earned two SAG Awards for her performances.
In 2018, Mandy married singer Taylor Goldsmith and they welcomed a baby boy named August in 2021. More recently, the Saved! star gave birth to son Ozzie.
Erik von Detten
Erik von Detten, who played heartthrob Josh Bryant, has done a lot of voiceover work over the years, including Recess, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and most famously voicing Sid in both Toy Story and Toy Story 3.
In 2018, he married Los Angeles realtor Angela von Detten and the pair have since welcomed daughter Claire and son Thomas.
The 40-year-old has spoken openly about leaving acting and focusing on family life, and works as a manager for a finance company - though he's up for returning to The Princess Diaries screen.
