Where the Crawdads Sing filming locations including New Orleans

The highly-anticpated film adaptation of Delia Owens' novel Where the Crawdads Sing has finally landed on the big screen.

Directed by Olivia Newman and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter, the plot follows the life of Kya (played by Daisy Edgar Jones ) with two timelines intertwining; her life as a child growing up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina, and the investigation into the apparent murder of a Chase Andrews (played by Harris Dickinson).

With a soundtrack that includes Taylor Swift 's 'Carolina', it's set to be one of the year's big blockbusters.

Although the story is set in North Carolina in the fictional town of Barkley Cove, it's actually the US state of Louisiana which provided the filming locations for the town and marshes.

Filming took place on location in Louisiana (Sony Pictures)

Where the Crawdads Sing was filmed on location across the likes of New Orleans and Houma, between April and July last year.

Downtown Houma served as the fictional Barkley Cove, and was given a '60s makeover for filming. Real-life shops in the region were given temporary facades, and retro cars were parked to line the streets.

As for the marshes themselves? They were also real life locations, with filming taking place predominantly on the wetlands in the Fontainebleau and Fairview-Riverside State Parks.

In fact, filming was often disrupted due to extreme weather conditions such as lightning storms, floods and heat. (All alongside disruption due to the Covid pandemic of course).

Still, there was plenty of time for the cast and crew to enjoy some exploring.

Daisy Edgar Jones spoke of the experience and told Vanity Fair that the cast would often spend their free time kayaking down the canals, partaking in crawfish boils, and enjoying the music floating down Frenchmen Street in New Orleans.

Speaking about the summer heat, she quipped: "I never sweated so much in my life. I learned how wonderful linen is.”

For Brits who want to go and check out the locations for themselves, the easiest way is to fly to New Orleans.

Airlines such as British Airways and Aer Lingus offer direct routes, with a flight time of approximately 10 hours from London airports. If you're not fussed about a layover, there are some flights which include stopovers in New York City.

Houma is about an hour's drive from New Orleans itself, or alternatively there are direct trains and bus routes you can take.

The State Parks of Fontainebleau and Fairview-Riverside both offer visitor centres with plenty of tips on the best walks and activities - you can get more information on lastateparks.com.
