Where Manchester United are up to with Alejandro Garnacho contract talks

Manchester United feel comfortable about Alejandro Garnacho's future at the club as talks over a new deal continue.

The 18-year-old came off the bench to net a dramatic winner for United against Fulham on Sunday, his first Premier League goal for the club.

Garnacho only signed his first professional contract when he turned 17 last July, penning a deal until 2024 with the option of an additional year at the club's discretion.

Sources say United are comfortable with Garnacho's current contract situation due to the length of his existing deal but are keen to reward their latest academy star for his development.

His current deal includes a number of performance-based triggers that result in a permanent wage increase once activated. Garnacho has already triggered a number of them since he signed the deal last year.

It has been a stratospheric year for the winger, who received a call-up to the Argentina squad, scored seven goals in six games during United's triumphant FA Youth Cup campaign, and went on the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

The teenager was subject to numerous loan offers in the summer window, with the most concrete proposals coming from Spain, but it was decided he would remain at United to continue his development.

Garnacho netted his first senior goal in the Europa League victory over Real Sociedad two weeks ago and grabbed his second in the dying seconds at Craven Cottage over the weekend.

The teenage winger joined United from Atletico Madrid for £420,000 in 2020 as part of a recruitment drive that saw the club sign three young players from Spain, with Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez also joining from Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

Football director John Murtough played a pivotal role in getting the deal over the line, while Head of Academy Nick Cox was crucial in selling the move to his family, particularly in convincing them why a move to English football was the right step at such a young age.

Garnacho, who represented Spain at youth level but qualifies for Argentina through his mother, turned down an offer from Borussia Dortmund in order to join United two years ago.

He was named United's U18 Player of the Year in May, following in the footsteps of Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford and Angel Gomes to win the award in recent years.
