Where is the Great North Run finishing line - one of the most welcome sights for Geordie runners

The Great North Run is under way.

Tens of thousands of runners are pounding 13.1 miles of Tyneside roads as they take part in one of the world's largest half marathons on Sunday, September 11.

The iconic race is famed for its warm atmosphere, with crowds of well-wishers never failing to line the streets so they can cheer their friends – and strangers – along the course.

It takes in Newcastle city centre and Tyne Bridge as the runners make their way from Newcastle to South Shields.

And the finish is a mile-long jaunt down South Shields' seafront.

Runners head through Marsden, on the outskirts of South Shields, and onto Prince Edward Road, before heading north for the final mile or so.

They finish on Coast Road, close to the Bamburgh pub.

The finish line is around 15 minutes walk from South Shields Metro Station. If you want to see a loved one as they complete the half marathon race, get down in plenty of time.
