Where is Armie Hammer now? The latest news on the controversial actor

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 17: Armie Hammer at the "Hotel Mumbai" Press Conference at the Crosby Street Hotel on March 17, 2019 in New York City.

Where is Armie Hammer now? After sexual abuse allegations were lobbied against the former actor in 2021, he has kept a seriously low profile in the years that have followed. So in 2023, what is the latest on the 37-year-old?

The public figure had appeared in numerous high-profile movies—such as Hotel Mumbai, Call Me By Your Name, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E—but after a spate of rumors surfaced about Armie's alleged actions against multiple women, his acting career came to an abrupt stop in 2021. Following the accusations, some even more explosive claims were made about his family's wicked past, with the release of the haunting TV project House of Hammer on Discovery+ back in September 2022.

While Armie himself retreated from the spotlight following the original accusations, the documentary show left everyone curious about the actor's whereabouts and future—so here's the most current update on the former star's whereabouts, including the the most recent news we have on those legal matters.

Where is Armie Hammer now?

In February 2021, Hammer came under investigation by the LAPD after sexual assault claims were made against him by a woman named Effie, according to Deadline. She accused him of "mentally, emotionally and sexually" abusing her, and even claimed that she feared for her life while the two were together.

The abuse claims were followed by reports of Armie Hammer's alleged cannibalism too, from multiple women.

Shortly after the news broke, onlookers spotted the Call Me By Your Name actor entering a rehab treatment facility in Florida in late May 2021. He was quickly ostracized by Hollywood too, and around the same time was dropped from his agency, WME, and multiple projects, including upcoming films and Broadway productions, such as Shotgun Wedding alongside Jennifer Lopez.

Following his stint in rehab, Hammer spent some time in the Cayman Islands alongside his estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers (from whom he's now divorced) and their two young children. The family was reportedly staying in a home paid for by actor Robert Downey Jr, a friend of Hammer's.

A few weeks prior, news broke in July 2022 in People that Hammer had been cut off from his family's fortune. The unnamed source claimed: "His dad won't help him anymore and he's been cut off, so he has got to work." Armie's father has since passed away however, in November 2022.

Rumors even started to spread that as he had been struggling to make ends meet, he began working as a timeshare salesman while in the Cayman Islands; though this has since been debunked.

Hammer reportedly returned to the States in August 2022, when he was spotted poolside in Southern California, per Page Six.

After maintaining complete silence in the media since being hit with the accusations, in April 2023, Armie gave an interview with Air Mail sharing his side of the story for the first time.

In reference to the accusations, the controversial performer said: "I had a very intense and extreme lifestyle. I would scoop up these women, bring them into it—into this whirlwind of travel and sex and drugs and big emotions flying around—and then as soon as I was done, I’d just drop them off and move on to the next woman, leaving that woman feeling abandoned or used."

He also revealed to the outlet that he was sexually abused by a youth pastor when he was 13 years old, which he says led to his interest in BDSM. "What that did for me was it introduced sexuality into my life in a way that it was completely out of my control. I was powerless in the situation. I had no agency in the situation. My interests then went to: I want to have control in the situation, sexually."

Hammer's ex-wife, Elizabeth Chambers, also shared her first interview on the situation in February 2023, revealing that she was just as blindsided by the horrific allegations as the public was. She told Elle: “I was learning things as the public was. I was like, ‘There are no words."

What happened during the Armie Hammer divorce and custody battle?

Shortly after the couple's divorce was finalized in 2023—they claimed irreconcilable differences three years ago—we learned that Hammer and Chambers would share "joint legal custody" of their children, which includes stipulations such as attending parenting counseling, not smoking in front of them, and not giving them excessive amounts of candy, among other factors.

Additionally, Hammer will pay $1,500 in child support, a controversial number that made headlines due to his family's fortune.

Chambers revealed that she and her ex are "committed fully and wholly" to their son and daughter, and talk all the time regarding their well-being.

"Armie has been focused on his healing," she said, according to People. "There's the oxygen mask theory: You can't really take care of someone until you are taken care of.

"There's a reason on the plane they say, 'Secure your own mask before helping others.' He has been very busy securing his own mask. My mask has been secured, [the kids'] masks are on, so right now it's really been a lot about focusing on them, protecting them."

"At the end of the day, that's the goal. We're in constant communication and all that matters is that he is the best dad for our children. Obviously he processes everything else that he's dealing with personally — and that's his own journey now," Chambers said.

Following the allegations, has Armie Hammer been charged with any crimes then? The former Hollywood star will not face charges following a completed investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department into the sexual assault allegations made against the actor, per a CNN report on May 31, 2023.

“Sexual assault cases are often difficult to prove, which is why we assign our most experienced prosecutors to review them. In this case, those prosecutors conducted an extremely thorough review, but determined that at this time, there is insufficient evidence to charge Mr. Hammer with a crime,” Tiffiny Blacknell, Director of the Bureau of Communications told the outlet.

Blacknell also noted that it was difficult to charge Hammer given the 'complex' relationships between him and his accusers.

"Due to the complexity of the relationship and inability to prove a non-consensual, forcible sexual encounter we are unable to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt."

In response to his being cleared in the investigation, Hammer posted a statement on Instagram: "I am very grateful to the District Attorney for conducting a thorough investigation and coming to the conclusion that I have stood by this entire time, that no crime was committed. I look forward to beginning what will be a long, difficult process of putting my life back together now that my name is cleared."

Hammer has since deleted the post, and his entire Instagram feed, so we unfortunately can't share it.

What is the Hammer family documentary about?

We're up to date on where Armie Hammer stands today, but what about the history of him and his family? The explosive true crime docu-series House of Hammer not only sits down with two of the actor's alleged victims, both of whom present his supposed abusive text and voice messages—but it also jumps down the rabbit hole of generations past, detailing cases of manslaughter, murder and abuse within the family.

"If you believe in making deals with the devil, the Hammers are top of the totem pole. Every generation of my family has been involved with dark misdeeds," the actor's aunt, Casey Hammer, says in the trailer.

As far as her nephew goes, Casey wasn't surprised to learn of the shocking allegations back in 2021. "You don't just wake up one day and become a monster," she told Insider. "It's a learned behavior and again, that's why I wasn't shocked by a lot of what was happening."

Two of the alleged victims, Courtney Vucekovich and Julia Morrison, also reveal shocking evidence of Hammer's sexual predilections in the documentary—texts from the actor that read, "I'm 100% a cannibal," and a handwritten note exclaiming, "I'm going to bite the **** out of you." Snippets of his alleged voicemails are also incredibly graphic.

But as mentioned, the actor maintained his innocence throughout the allegations, before before the docu-series and after. According to a statement from his lawyer: "From day one, Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions [with sexual partners] have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory."

House of Hammer is available to stream on Max.
