Where does Vera live? Here's the location of the detective's house in the ITV drama

Viewers of Vera have found themselves transported around some of the North East's most scenic locations during the series' lengthy run.

Over the years the Northumberland-set drama has seen the eponymous detective venture further and further afield on her murder investigations.

And now, 20 years and 10 series on, location-spotters are still being kept on their toes with Brenda Blethyn's detective character exploring an even wider patch.

The current series, which ends its run this Sunday, has this time even included scenes shot at the Scottish Borders as well as in North Yorkshire.

While the debut episode in the four-parter mainly stuck to its roots - featuring local sites as well as organisations such as Great North Air Ambulance, with Blethyn saying "the people involved in that are fantastic" - it also included scenes at a famous pub on the Yorkshire Moors.

"We filmed some of the scenes at the Tan Hill Inn at Swaledale in North Yorkshire which is the highest pub in Britain," said the actress.

The second episode's story featured a salmon fishing farm and she added: "We filmed that at Burnmouth in the Scottish Borders and other places including Alnwick, Whitley Bay and the Woodhorn Museum near Ashington.

"It rained and it rained and it rained. We had to keep changing location because of the rain - improvising around it - but it sometimes proved beneficial!"

Episode three turned the focus back to Tyneside, with familiar sights of the Brett Oils factory site on the Gateshead banks of the Tyne, opposite Newcastle' s Copthorne Hotel, and this week's finale will show Sunderland Greyhound Stadium.

But throughout her travels over the years, Blethyn's character always has somewhere she calls home.

While many regular viewers may have discovered the location of Vera's house, others will have long wondered where it's situated.

For the detective's home, the team actually make use of a property on Holy Island while the house's interior scenes are shot on a studio set in North Tyneside.

Blethyn explained: "The exterior of Vera’s home is on Holy Island, while the interior is a set at our Wallsend studio base.

"The studio interior is an exact replica of what it’s really like on Lindisfarne - I think it might be a foot wider, to allow for camera movement."

She added: "Sometimes when I’m on that set I forget I’m not actually in Vera’s house. It’s so brilliantly reproduced. Our art department are second to none."

The last episode in the current series of Vera, called The Escape Ten, will screen on ITV on February 2 at 8pm.
