Where Celtic, Rangers and Hearts campaigns leave the coefficient as disaster averted despite season of woe

After the highs of recent years, it's been a coefficient campaign to forget for Scottish clubs.

A steady climb up the UEFA rankings earned SPFL clubs the chance at two places in this season's Champions League and a few cracks at the Europa League and Europa Conference League. When all was said and done in the ever-treacherous summer qualifiers, Rangers had joined Celtic - whose title win took them straight into the group stage - at UEFA's top table while Hearts' Europa League disappointment against Zurich was soothed by a soft landing into the Conference League.

But from there on out it's being tough going for the Premiership trio. Rangers have lost all six of their matches and finished the campaign as statistically the Champions League's worst ever team, while Celtic mustered two points - an all-time club worst in the competition. Hearts have picked up two wins against RFS but found the likes of Fiorentina and Istanbul Basaksehir too hot to handle, although they can still end their campaign by upsetting the Turkish side on Thursday night.

This string of poor results is inevitably reflected in the coefficient. Points added to the total ahead of Hearts' final outing sits at just 3.5.

Individual contributions are as follows: Rangers (6.5), Celtic (6), Hearts (4) Dundee United (1), Motherwell (0). The clubs' individual returns are divided by five (the number of teams entered into UEFA competitions) to arrive at the 3.5 figure, taking our overall coefficient score to 36.400.

Rangers finished the campaign as the highest contributors to Scotland's total despite losing all their Champions League games, although they did play at least three more matches than every other club. Consistency is key in maintaining coefficient rankings and it's that steady improvement which saw Scotland rise into the top 10 as of this season.

Getting there is one thing, but staying in the upper echelons is another - especially when accruing points is made that much harder by teams graduating into the Champions League. The good news is that the poor points return does not spell disaster just yet.

Scotland have been leapfrogged by Belgium and drop from eighth place to ninth but won't drop any further. Austria are the nation below in 10th but five of their six representatives have been eliminated. Austria Wien could add a final 0.16 points to their total if they beat Hapoel Beer Sheva on Thursday night, but it's Sturm Graz who are the team to watch.

They can still qualify for the Europa League knockouts if they beat Midtjylland on Thursday night, which would open up the possibility of further coefficient points if they manage a run deep into the latter stages.

Austria currently sit on 33.600 points to Scotland's 36.400, they're still some way off overtaking.
