Before the Tennessee Titans get busy in free agency this offseason, the team is expected to cut some players — but when exactly will those cuts take place?
While we can’t say for sure, we can take a look back at recent history to get an idea of when they’ll start rolling in.
In 2022, the Titans’ first cuts were reported on March 10, when the team parted ways with left guard Rodger Saffold, tackle Kendall Lamm and running back Darrynton Evans.
Tennessee kicked things off a bit earlier in 2021, though, when the team cut wide receiver Adam Humphries and two others on February 25. In the year prior, the Titans’ first cuts came on March 13 with kicker Ryan Succop and tight end Delanie Walker.
Based on all that, it’s a pretty wide range of when the Titans might start with their cuts.
They could come anywhere from the last week of February, right up until the start of free agency, which unofficially kicks off on March 13 with the beginning of the legal tampering period.
Back in January we went over the list of Titans who could get the boot, a group that includes kicker Randy Bullock, linebacker Zach Cunningham, outside linebacker Bud Dupree, offensive lineman Jamarco Jones, left tackle Taylor Lewan, wide receiver Robert Woods and quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
While I continue to believe Tannehill will stay in Nashville, cutting all seven of those players would amount to a 2023 cap savings of $66.7 million, and that’s assuming all are cut pre-June 1.
Those moves would leave Tennessee with approximately $45.4 million in cap space, per Over the Cap.
Of course, Tennessee could also choose to restructure or extend some players to lower their 2023 cap hits and free up more space. Potential candidates for those include Tannehill, running back Derrick Henry and safety Kevin Byard.
