When will the heatwave end and how hot will it get in Wales?

People across Wales are bracing themselves for two days of extreme weather as the heatwave takes full effect on Monday and Tuesday. Forecasts warn that it will be exceptionally hot, with new records expected to be set over both days. The highest temperature we've experienced is 35.2°C, which was set in Hawarden in August 1990. But that is expected to be left in the dust, as weatherman Derek Brockway has suggested it is expected to reach 36°C tomorrow and 37°C the day after.

But those dreading the soaring temperatures will be glad to hear that it is set to be short lived. It will turn cloudy with heavy outbreaks of rain on Wednesday, before temperatures return to normal once again. Mr Brockway has written today in a series of tweets: "Today is the hottest day of the year so far in Wales. Now 30°C in Gogerddan near Aberystwyth. Tomorrow will be even hotter with likely record breaking temperatures. Forecast maximum temperatures Sunday to Wednesday from Met Office UKV model. 32°C in Hawarden, Flintshire today. 36°C tomorrow. 37°C on Tuesday. Welsh record of 35.2°C set in Hawarden in August 1990 is likely to be beaten. A short intense heatwave then much cooler Wednesday."

The BBC Weather forecast reads as follows: "Tomorrow will be exceptionally hot, with temperatures reaching the mid-to-high thirties, with isolated maximums in the forties. There will be plenty of sunshine and winds will be light. Tuesday will see plenty of sunshine. It will be exceptionally hot. Mid to high 30s are expected with isolated maximums of 40C. Still warm Tuesday night. Turning cloudy with heavy showers and thunderstorms developing overnight. Wednesday will be breezy with variable cloud and sunshine, and scattered showers. A much cooler day. Thursday will see variable cloud and sunshine."

The Met Office predicts as follows: "A fine and dry day with plenty of sunshine and light winds. Feeling very hot. Maximum temperature 37 °C. Tuesday, another very hot and sunny day. Cloudier and cooler on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain, possibly heavy at times. Mostly dry with sunny spells on Thursday, temperatures near normal."
