When will Paperchase products be available in Tesco, and why did the shops close?

Paperchase products will soon return to the high street, although inside Tesco shops after all branches of the stationers closed in the spring.

The supermarket bought the stationary brand earlier this year and pledged to stock the array of pens, pencils, paperwork and rubbers (some of them scented) that made it famous.

A Tesco spokesperson told Retail Gazette: “Having acquired the Paperchase brand back in January, we look forward to bringing this well-loved name to Tesco and are excited to launch a range of Paperchase products in selected stores and online in the coming weeks.”

Here is all we know about the evolution from one brand to another.

When will Paperchase products be available in Tesco?

Tesco has started the process of adding Paperchase products to its shelves. Some shops already have them, according to retail insider Bryan Roberts.

He tweeted: “First glimpse of the impending Paperchase sections in Tesco, plus the debut of ads on scan-as-you-shop handsets launched the other week. The ads at the top change every minute and are generally tied into Clubcard promotions.”

Why did the shops close?

Paperchase shut up shop after going into administration in January.

All the 106 shops around the UK closed in early April.

At the time, administrators Begbies Traynor said in a statement: “On January 21, Mark Fry, Kirstie Provan, and Gary Shankland, of Begbies Traynor, were appointed as joint administrators of Aspen Phoenix Newco Limited, which trades as Paperchase.

“Unfortunately, despite a comprehensive sales process, no viable offers were received for the company, or its business and assets, on a going-concern basis.

“However, there has been significant interest in the Paperchase brand and attendant intellectual property.

“The joint administrators will continue trading the company’s operations in the short term, with all stores remaining open and trading as normal.”
