When will new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa appear as David Tennant makes surprise return

Doctor Who fans went wild over the weekend as Sunday night's episode saw the debut of the 14th Doctor.

It was announced back in May that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa was set to take charge of the TARDIS and in Sunday night's episode Jodie Whittaker, who has been playing the 13th Doctor, waved goodbye to the role as she regenerated.

But fans were shocked by a huge twist when it wasn't Ncuti she regenerated into, but David Tennant.

Tennant played the 10th Doctor in the long-running series but has now made a surprising return as the 14th Doctor.

As the actor appeared on screens after the regeneration, he echoed his first line from 2005: "I know these teeth", before incredulously checking out his new body.

But fans were left in the dark about what comes next as the credits began rolling.

Now, the BBC has revealed more details about Tennant's time as the 14th Doctor, as well as when Gatwa will be making his debut.

How long will David Tennant be the Doctor for again?

Fans were ecstatic to find out about the return of David Tennant as the Doctor, but the iconic actor won't be sticking around for too long.

The BBC has now revealed that Tennant will reprise his role as the Doctor in just three special episodes that are set to air in November 2023.

The episodes will mark the show's 60th anniversary and Catherine Tate will also be returning alongside Tennant for them.

Speaking about his return, David told the BBC: "To be able to revisit that and to get another another shot, it was a total joy from start to finish."

He added: "I thought it was something that I would certainly never be as involved in again... it's like being given the loveliest present. And I'm very, very excited. I'm thrilled and I hope people will enjoy the stories we've got to tell."

We'll have to wait a while until we see Ncuti Gatwa step into the huge role as he's not set to take over as the 15th Doctor until the end of Tennant's special episodes.

Gatwa's first episode as the Doctor is expected to air over the festive period in 2023.

Teasing the lead up to Gatwa's regeneration, showrunnner Russell T Davies said: “If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way!

"The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”
