Meanwhile, there is also confirmation of a return to summer conditions very soon as Met Eireann pinpoints a return of high temperatures to finish out the summer season.
Before a return to 24C heat, most counties are in for a miserable run but high pressure will continue to slowly build from Thursday onwards, leading to mostly dry and settled conditions.
A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Fairly misty and cloudy to begin this morning with some lingering rain or drizzle. Drier and brighter conditions in the northwest will become more widespread through the morning, with sunny spells and just isolated showers developing by the early afternoon.
"Highest temperatures of 17 to 20 degrees, warmest in southern counties in light northwest or variable winds.
"Mostly dull with outbreaks of rain extending northeastwards from the southwest through Monday, turning heaviest in the afternoon and evening, with hill, mist and coastal fog too. Highest temperatures will range 17 to 21 degrees, in light to moderate southwest breezes.
"Mixed for the rest of the week with rain to start, and settled conditions potentially building by the end of the week. Warmest conditions across the south and east."
Tuesday will see temperatures reach 24C while nice weather is expected to follow for the rest of the week, the forecaster added: "Current indications suggest that high pressure will continue to slowly build from Thursday onwards, leading to mostly dry and settled conditions."
Following this Wednesday will bring “a mix of sunny spells and light scattered showers for Wednesday. Cooler than previous days with highest temperatures of 15 to 20 with moderate southwest winds veering northwesterly.”
Thankfully the forecast for Thursday says it will remain “mostly dry with the possibility of long spells of sunshine as high pressure looks to build. Fresher than of late with highest temperatures of 14 to 18 in light to moderate northwesterly winds.”
