When Tottenham Last Suffered Relegation From English Top-Flight

The threat of relegation is an increasing possibility for Tottenham after they suffered their seventh Premier League defeat in their last 10 games.

Tottenham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday after a miserable first-half performance in which the Toffees scored three goals inside the first-half.

The result has left them 15th in the Premier League – just eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham this season have been defeated in 11 of their 21 league fixtures. Their current points-per-game ratio stands at 1.14, which if it continues, would put them on course for 43 for the campaign.

This would be their lowest points total since the 1980-81 season where they finished with 43. However, that season teams only got two points for a victory.

So Tottenham are actually on track for their worst season since the last time that they suffered relegation from English top-flight.

When Tottenham Last Suffered Relegation

Tottenham last suffered relegation from the top-flight of English football 48 years ago in the 1976-77 season.

They finished bottom of the English First Division – though just five points separated Birmingham City in 13th and Tottenham in 22nd showing how close the relegation battle was.

Tottenham are one of six clubs who have never been relegated during the Premier League era. That list also includes Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Since the Premier League’s inception, Tottenham have never finished lower than 15th and last placed outside of the top 10 in 2007-08 when they also won the league cup to give that campaign some silver-lining.

The last time they might have feared relegation was in the 2008-09 season. That campaign saw Juande Ramos sacked after picking up just two points in Tottenham’s opening eight games to the season.

After 21 games, Tottenham had less points than what they do this campaign with 20. However, they did recover strongly to finish eighth under Harry Redknapp.

Ange Postecoglou’s Job At Risk Amid Relegation Form

With Tottenham looking over their shoulders at a possible relegation fight, this has brought pressure on Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham have five points from their last possible 30 in the Premier League which is relegation form. Only Leicester and Southampton have taken fewer points over the same period.

In the next Tottenham manager betting odds market, the likes of Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and Fulham’s Marco Silva are among those fancied to replace Postecoglou should he get the sack.

Spurs next host Leicester in the Premier League which gives them a strong chance of returning to winning ways.

However, their current injury issues are a major concern and played a big role in their current bad form.

Tottenham have been plagued by injuries this term. The majority of their first-choice backline – goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are out of contention.

The latest injury news for Tottenham is that £65m summer signing Dominic Solanke suffered a knee injury in training.

Speaking ahead of the defeat to Everton, Postecoglou said they are not sure of the ‘extent’ of the injury.
