When the Met Office and BBC say the summer weather could return

Low pressure is set to dominate our weather throughout this week with high winds and thundery rain, but there are some signs it is looking better for the weekend. The Met Office and BBC Weather both say that high pressure should be trying to push through by the end of the week.

But before that people are being warning about some "unseasonably windy" weather that will bring heavy rain to parts of the UK from the west. On Tuesday morning, speed restrictions were placed on the Britannia Bridge on the A55 in north Wales because of high winds.

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Tuesday says: "It will be cloudy and windy across Wales today, particularly on the coast. Rain will be confined to the west coast in the morning but gradually spread inland during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

"The evening will be wet and windy everywhere, but the rain will gradually ease from the west during the night. Minimum temperature 11 °C." It then says that Wednesday will be "grey and breezy", adding that: "Showers and longer spells of rain are likely, particularly on the hills, where heavy bursts are likely. Thunderstorms are possible in the east. Maximum temperature 19 °C."

The outlook for Wales from Thursday to Saturday is: " Heavy and perhaps thundery showers are likely on Thursday. Further showers are likely on Friday and Saturday but in-between some spells of sunshine will develop."

There is some hope for Saturday (BBC)

BBC forecaster Stav Danaos said on Tuesday (June 28): "Low pressure will be close by the UK throughout this week, so it's going to stay relatively unsettled with sunshine and showers. It is going to be wet and windy across more northern or western areas throughout the day on Tuesday, so the rain will be quite heavy, particularly for western parts and southwest Scotland. That rain getting into western England and Wales as well. And it will be windy - around 40 maybe 50 miles an hour in the worst affected areas.

"By the end of the week, in between the showers there will be sunshine with some strong high UV levels expected in many areas. And then, as we move deeper into the weekend, it stays rather settled and there are signs of high pressure trying to build in next week."

The long-range Met Office forecast for the start of July is showing a north/south divide. It says: "Into next week (starting July 4), it will likely remain dry across the south and southwest, while risk of more unsettled conditions remains in the north, with showers at times, and occasionally some longer spells of rain. Eastern and southern areas are likely to stay dry, but with a low risk of a generally isolated shower at times. Temperatures are expected to be close to or slightly below normal in the north but above normal in the south."

BBC Weather's long-range forecast for next week - Monday, July 4 to Sunday, July 10 - says that the strongest models are signalling that "high pressure is likely to dominate the weather over the UK. It says: "With high pressure to the west and an area of low pressure near Iceland, a westerly to north-westerly flow will develop keeping temperatures near average. Further south and east it will be drier and warmer with temperatures possibly reaching above average for the time of year."
