When the festive bank holidays are this year as Christmas Day gets substitute holiday

It may still be a little while away yet, but as the nights set in and the weather turns crisp we can’t help but look forward to having those cosy days off over the festive period.

There are three bank holiday days across Christmas and New Year - these typically take place on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. But when these days fall on a weekend, the holidays instead fall on a weekday to ensure that those working Monday to Friday get the extra days off.

Whatever your plans for the festive period, many of us will be looking ahead to our time off. Here are the remaining bank holiday dates for this year as well as the New Year, as reported by the Liverpool Echo .

The next bank holiday will be Boxing Day on Monday, December 26 . As Christmas Day takes place on the Sunday, there will then be a substitute bank holiday on Tuesday, December 27 .

New Year’s Day also falls on a Sunday this year, so the first bank holiday of 2023 will take place on Monday, January 2 . If you’re really looking to plan ahead, here are all the dates for the rest of next year’s bank holidays:

  • Friday, April 7 (Good Friday)
  • Monday, April 10 (Easter Monday)
  • Monday, May 1 (Early May bank holiday)
  • Monday, May 29 (Spring bank holiday)
  • Monday, August 28 (Summer bank holiday)
  • Monday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
  • Tuesday, December 26 (Boxing Day)

There may also be an extra bank holiday in 2023 for the coronation of King Charles . Reports suggest that this could take place on June 3 - although Buckingham Palace has said that the date is “purely speculation” at this stage, whenever the occasion falls it is likely to be public holiday as it was when the Queen was crowned in 1953.
