Amazon is rolling out new electric delivery rickshaws in India. Today morning, the world's richest person, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who was back home after a three-day visit to India last week, tweeted a video announcing the rollout of a fleet of electric-powered delivery rickshaws. Bezos made the announcement on Twitter, which shows a full fleet of electric rickshaws that will be used by the company for order deliveries. The video shows Bezos driving one of the e-rickshaws. "Hey, India. We’re rolling out our new fleet of electric delivery rickshaws. Fully electric. Zero carbon," Bezos tweeted.
The announcement comes days after Amazon had announced investment of $1 billion for digitising small and medium businesses, and creation of one million jobs by 2025. In 2020, these vehicles will operate in over 20 cities of India - Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nagpur and Coimbatore, among others.
These EVs are in addition to the global commitment of one lakh EVs in the delivery fleet by 2030 announced in the Climate Pledge signed by Amazon.
As part of the pledge, Amazon had announced its plans to introduce 10,000 of EVs into its delivery fleet globally in 2022 and one lakh vehicles by 2030 – saving four million metric tonnes of carbon per year by 2030.
Last week, Jeff Bezos was in India for a three-day visit, during which he attended a company event and met some senior government officials.
