When it's expected to snow again in the North East according to Met Office weather experts

There were some picture-postcard scenes across the North East on Tuesday morning, with many parts of the region blanketed by snow.

Temperatures dropped overnight and warnings were put in place of possible disruption to road, rail and air travel. There were also two yellow weather warnings from the Met Office, urging people to take care outdoors.

An alert for snow and ice is in place until 10am on Wednesday. and another one for snow runs from 3am on Thursday to 6pm on Friday. While there was no more snow predicted for the rest of Tuesday, forecasters expected some white stuff to come our way in the coming days.

According to the Met Office, it is going to remain "cold this week, with snow showers and widespread frosts". Some scattered snow showers are possible in some areas on Wednesday but most of the snow will come on Thursday and Friday.

At the time of writing, the forecast showed sleet in Newcastle at around 6pm on Thursday, 3am on Friday morning, then again at 3pm that day, with rain in between those times. Light snow showers are shown at 6pm on Friday.

In Hexham, Northumberland, light snow is expected from midday onwards on Thursday, turning heavy from around 6pm and continuing through the night. The heavy snowfall will stay till 9am on Friday.

Over in Consett, County Durham, light snowfall will begin at around midday on Thursday, which is expected to turn heavy from 6pm. The forecast for the area shows snow until 3pm on Friday, heavier in the morning and lighter by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, there could be light snow in the early hours of Thursday and some between 9am and midday. Below, is the five-day weather forecast for the whole of the North East.

North East weather forecast

Tuesday:

A very cold start with a widespread frost and scattered snow showers, mostly along exposed windward coasts. Showers easing off through the afternoon with cloud clearing to give another very cold night, with widespread frost and some icy patches forming. Maximum temperature 4°C.

Tuesday night:

A very cold night with a severe frost, and icy patches in places still damp from daytime showers. The odd snow shower may affect exposed windward coasts at times. Minimum temperature -4°C.

Wednesday:

A bright, cold, and frosty start with scattered snow showers along coastlines. Cloudier through the afternoon with the odd snow shower pushing inland at times. Maximum temperature 3°C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Staying cold with widespread frosts overnight. Risk of disruptive snow and strong winds to occur on Thursday and Friday. Saturday looking drier and brighter.
