When is the next Fortnite update? Godzilla, Kong and Hatsune Miku reportedly coming to the game

Epic is readying a new Fortnite update that could see Godzilla terrorise the game’s map modeled on his native Japan, alongside other titans from the Monsterverse.

Players have been patiently awaiting the kaiju ever since he was teased as part of the new season late last year.

The king of monsters may be the main attraction, but there’s plenty of additional content coming to the game, too.

For those who like to venture beyond the popular Battle Royale mode, Fortnite Festival is getting a new featured act. Plus, there’s the usual raft of new skins, emotes, and subtle map changes.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Fortnite update, titled version 33.20, including its release date and what it will include.

When is Fortnite’s next update coming out?

Fortnite’s next update is widely expected to be released on Tuesday, January 14 at 12pm in the UK (4am PT / 7am ET).

Ahead of its imminent launch, Epic has started internally testing (or “staging”) the update on its servers, per leakers.

The latest content drop comes halfway through Fortnite Chapter 6, Season 1, which concludes on February 21.

What to expect in Fortnite v33.20

It’s safe to say that players were a little disappointed when Fortnite Chapter 6, Season 1 kicked off without its star, Godzilla.

When is Godzilla coming to Fortnite?

We soon learned that the giant lizard with an atomic roar would land in the Fortnite shop on Friday, January 17. With the big date fast approaching, the latest leaks suggest we could be in for a clash of the beasts.

Not only will Godzilla be available in the Fortnite shop, but he may also be seen roaming around the map, where he may face off against his on-and-off enemy King Kong and his robotic nemesis Mechagodzilla. It’s a punch-up plucked straight from the 2021 blockbuster, Godzilla vs. Kong.

Who is the Fortnite Festival featured act and what’s in the Music Pass?

Meanwhile, Fortnite Festival is about to kick off its new season, complete with a brand new featured artist and an accompanying Music Pass.

The headliner is almost certain to be Hatsune Miku, a virtual pop star who remains relatively unknown outside her native Japan, despite the occasional brush with the West.

Miku, a 16-year-old digital avatar who sports turquoise pigtails, previously opened for Lady Gaga (herself a former Fortnite Festival act), collaborated with Pharrell and performed on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Soon, you’ll be able to jam to her songs on Fortnite Festival, grab her skins from the Fortnite Shop and Music Pass, and use her Miku Miku Beam Emote on the other game modes, according to leaks.

What else is new in the latest update?

Elsewhere, Epic may update Ballistic, the first-person mode featuring close-quarters, team-based shootouts that arrived last December. The snow on the map may also start to melt following the end of Winterfest.
