The release of the new Game of Thrones prequel series is fast approaching, with fans of the show likely excited and nervous in equal measure given how the last season ended in controversial fashion.
The show creators were accused of ruining some of people’s favourite characters, with many feeling let down with the ending given how much time they had invested over the course of eight seasons. This means that House of Dragon has its work cut out to win people over from the get go, but with a cast that boasts such famous names as Paddy Considine (King Viserys I Targaryen), Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen), Emma D'Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Lady Alicent Hightower) and Rhys Ifans (Ser Otto Hightower), this shouldn’t be too hard a task.

When will House of the Dragon be released in the UK?
House of the Dragon will come out on Monday, August 22, at 2am – so realistically people will be watching it at home on Monday evening. That said, antisocial start times didn’t stop Game of Thrones fans from staying up on Sunday nights in the past, or getting up extra early on Monday morning so they could watch the latest episode and (more importantly) avoid any potential spoilers on the internet that day.
How to watch House of the Dragon in the UK
As with Game of Thrones before, House of the Dragon will be available to watch on Sky Atlantic, or NOW if you’ve got a subscription to the streaming service. The first season of the show will be 10 episodes long, and from the two trailers released thus far, it seems like we’ve got another struggle for the iron throne on our hands.
Given the poor reception the last series of GoT received from both fans and critics alike, the writing and directing team of Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will have to work hard to get fans onside in the early episodes.
Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin said on his feelings towards the prequel: "I’m excited. It's always a little apprehensive when you turn your baby over to foster parents, but I am involved in this. It’s great to have Ryan [Condal], a great writer, and someone who really knew my world. He’s going to do his best to remain faithful to it."
He added: "I knew Miguel Sapochnik was an amazing director. He won an Emmy and directed some of our best episodes [of Game of Thrones]. There is always a little suspense to ‘how good is it going to be?’ But I think I am in good hands with Ryan and Miguel."
