Champions League draw date, time and format explained: Who Chelsea and Tottenham could face

Chelsea and Tottenham will nervously await finding out their last-16 Champions League opponents as the draw for the knockout stages comes closer.

The Blues secured a place in the hat for the next round in the penultimate matchday after a 1-0 away win against RB Salzburg despite only having one point from their opening two games. Antonio Conte's Spurs went the hard way around qualification, staging a second half fightback against Marseille to seal top spot in dramatic fashion

Both clubs fell to home Premier League defeats at the weekend, with injuries decimating their squads and making things rather tough for Graham Potter and Antonio Conte.

Chelsea and Tottenham aren't able to face each other in the next round but could yet come up against some elite opponents in the most challenging club tournament there is. The Blues have won the tournament twice but only progressed to the quarter-finals last season as defending champions whereas Tottenham haven't gotten to this stage since reaching the final in 2019.

Moving forward fans want to know what happens next. So let's break down when the Round of 16 draw is, how it works, who has qualified and when you need to tune back into the Champions League again.

When is the Champions League last 16 draw?

Date: Monday, November 7

Time: 11am (GMT)

Where: UEFA Headquarters, Nyon, Switzerland

The draw will be available to watch on UEFA's website via a live stream.

How does the draw work?

The 16 teams that finished first and second in their group have all been entered into the draw, however, they will be separated into two pots, with other stipulations applying.

The eight group winners will be seeded and placed into Pot 1, where they will be drawn against the eight runners-up who are unseeded and placed into Pot 2.

Teams from the same nations are unable to play each other, so for example Bayern Munich can not play RB Leipzig, and also teams that qualified from the same group can not be drawn into the same tie.

The group winners in Pot 1 will play their first legs away from home.

When are the games?

The Champions League Round of 16 ties will be played across February and March in 2023, they will all kick off at 8pm (GMT). The first legs fixtures will take place on February 14-15 and 21-22. while the second legs are scheduled for March 7-8 and 14-15.
