When and what time is the 2022 Christmas number one announced?

Getting a number one hit is every musician's dream - but having a chart-topping song around Christmas time makes the achievement even more special.

And let's face it, it just wouldn't be Christmas without the festive tunes to get you into a jolly spirit. Last year's Christmas number one spot went to social media personalities LadBaby.

Husband and wife duo Mark and Roxanne Hoyle became the first act in UK history to bag four Christmas number ones in a row when their song Sausage Rolls For Everyone took the top spot. Featuring Ed Sheeran and Elton John, the track raised funds for food bank charity The Trussell Trust.

And LadBaby are back at it again this year, hoping to secure a fifth Christmas number one with a cover of Band Aid's 1984 hit Do They Know It's Christmas?, titled Food Aid. Releasing the song on December 16, they sought help from an all-star cast of special guests - including Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis.

Other contenders for this year's Christmas number one include Youtuber megastars the Sidemen. The group has split into two and are battling it between themselves to see who can reach the number one spot. Could KSI, Vik and Tobi's track with JME, Christmas Drillings, reach the top spot? Or how about Simon, Harry, Ethan and Randolph's single This Or That?

Raye - who has recently become an independent artist - could clear the top spot with her viral hit Escapism, featuring 070 Shake. Sam Smith, who has enjoyed four weeks at number 1 with Unholy featuring Kim Petras, could land themselves another number one with festive tune Night Before Christmas.

Boxer Tyson Fury's cover of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline could also make it to the the top of the charts. Classic contenders include Mariah Carey with All I Want For Christmas Is You and Wham! with Last Christmas.

Usually the official charts countdown takes place on a Sunday. But for Christmas, it takes place on a Friday instead. This year's Christmas number one will be revealed on Friday December 23 - the day before Christmas Eve.

The full Christmas Top 40 will be counted down on BBC Radio 1's Official Chart Show with Jack Saunders from 4pm. Meanwhile the full Top 100 Official Christmas Singles Chart and Albums Chart will be published on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.
