When is Nicola Sturgeon speaking at the UK Covid Inquiry today? Former Scottish first minister gives evidence

Nicola Sturgeon is giving evidence to the Covid inquiry in Edinburgh on Wednesday (January 31) about the Scottish government's handling of the pandemic.

The hearing is set to take place all day, with Scotland's former first minister expected to be grilled on her leadership and wider decisions made by her government during Covid.

Ms Sturgeon may also be quizzed over revelations that she “retained no messages whatsoever” on her phone of WhatsApp conversations.

Scotland's former leader previously said she submitted copies of the messages to the inquiry last year, but they weren't retained on her device.

Ms Sturgeon is the latest in a long line of politicians, including members of her government, who have been quizzed over the UK's handling of the pandemic between 2020 and 2022.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf appeared before the hearing last week.

Ms Sturgeon's former chief of staff, Liz Lloyd, also testified at the inquiry last week, with her messages to the former Scottish leader being shown as evidence.

One message between Ms Lloyd and Ms Sturgeon featured the latter branding the former prime minister Boris Johnson a “f****** clown.”

Although quite a popular figure during the pandemic, Ms Sturgeon's surprise resignation last year was followed by her arrest over an investigation into Scottish National Party (SNP) finances. She was released without charge.

The latest UK Covid-19 Inquiry session is being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, with Ms Sturgeon having already arrived.

Her evidence began at 10am and will continue until around 4.30pm. However, these are only rough timings.
