When is Mother's Day in 2023 and why does the date change every year?

As Mother's Day rolls around again this year, children young and old will be searching for that perfect gift to show love for the special mother figure in their life.

Mother's Day originated in America, when when a woman called Anna Jarvis held a small memorial service for her own mother, in order to honour the sacrifices that mothers make for their children on a daily basis.

The idea grew in popularity and now it is a celebrated holiday all over the world, where mums get breakfast in bed, thoughtful gifts and cards from their children to thank them for all they do.

An unusual thing about Mother's Day is the fact that it falls on a different Sunday every year in the UK. But why is that?

Why does the date of Mother's Day change every year?

Mother's Day falls on the fourth Sunday during Lent. The date changes because the date of Lent changes every year depending on the cycle of the moon.

That means that Easter Sunday can occur on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25 and Mother's Day changes with it.

So this year, Mother's Day falls on Sunday, March 19.
