Rian Johnson’s Knives Out became a huge commercial and critical success upon its release in 2019, and its sequel is arguably one of the most anticipated films of the year. The murder mystery blockbuster received overwhelming acclaim, going on to gross more than $310m on a $40m budget – as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Johnson – best known as writer-director of Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi – had ideas for a series of whodunnits before Knives Out was even released, and the success of Knives Out paved the way for his plan to come to fruition. Two years after its release, Netflix acquired the rights to two standalone sequels in a deal worth a whopping $469 million, the first of which drops on the platform in December.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery boasts an all-star ensemble cast including Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, and Daniel Craig, who returns as the Southern detective Benoit Blanc. In it, the master sleuth travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a new case as a billionaire tech boss hosts a murder mystery party on his private island with a group of friends.

Johnson was inspired by the whodunnits of the late Agatha Christie, and tweeted that he wanted every film to stand on its own, each like “a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition and reason for being.” And though Glass Onion takes place in a markedly different clime to its predecessor, it promises another serpentine plot with twists and turns at every corner.
Glass Onion held its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival in September and received a limited run of just one week in cinemas ahead of its release on Netflix – dubbed a “sneak preview” release by the streaming giant. It marked the widest theatrical release ever for a Netflix film, followed by an almost month-long wait until its release on the platform.
