Every keen shopper knows that the best bargain events occur as the weather undergoes a downward shift. Expert retail enthusiasts, however, will already be marking their calendars for the biggest sales extravaganza of the year. Black Friday is a few short weeks away, and avid Christmas preppers are already itching to secure fabulous gifts and new winter wardrobes.

What is Black Friday?

The post-Thanksgiving sales event began as a means for retailers to clear their shop floors of old stock in time for the new year. Though there are a variety of myths and theories surrounding why exactly Black Friday is named as such, the most commonly accepted answer is that sales ledgers went from being ‘in the red’ to ‘in the black’ following the scrummage for brilliant bargains in the run-up to the festive period.

When is Black Friday this year?

Every year Black Friday takes place the weekend following Thanksgiving. This year, American Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 28, which means that Black Friday begins on Friday, November 29.
