When is BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022? Date, UK start time and nominees

Sports Personality of the Year 2022 is coming up and one candidate is leading the charge to win the gong. It will take place on Wednesday 21 December and the ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One from 6.45pm.

It will take place in Salford's Media City and the main award should be unveiled just before 9pm.

Beth Mead is the overwhelming favourite after finishing Euro 2022 with six goals and five assists as England Women won the tournament. Mead will hope to make it back-to-back female successes after tennis star Emma Raducanu won the award in 2021.

Ben Stokes is also in the frame having enjoyed an incredible start to life as England Test captain and playing a vital role in the T20 World Cup victory. He has been central to the country’s successes.

Other contenders

Ronnie O’Sullivan is in the mix after winning his seventh World Snooker Championship. The iconic snooker player shows no signs of letting up. Few upcoming stars in the sport have O’Sullivan’s drive and determination, which is why he continues to dominate the sport.

Harry Kane would have been very much up there amongst the favourites if he had guided the England Men’s National Team to World Cup glory. The Tottenham striker was having an excellent tournament but he will be remembered for skying his spot-kick as the Three Lions lost to France at the quarter-final stage and he is not among the nominees.

The same goes for Tyson Fury and Rory McIlroy, neither of whom have made it into the final list. Fury continued his unbeaten streak in the ring and McIlroy has been in scintillating form throughout the year.

Jessica Gadirova is among the nominees with the teenage gymnast having enjoyed a brilliant year. The 18-year-old won floor gold at the World Championships in Liverpool and also medalled in the team event and the all-around competition

Eve Muirhead is also in the final six having led Great Britain's women's team to curling gold at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It was success at the fourth attempt and Muirhead retired as Scotland's most decorated curler, having also won a sixth world mixed doubles title in 2022.

Another Scot in the form of Jake Wightman round out the list. The 28-year-old won 1500m gold at the World Championships in Oregon and also took medals from the European and Commonwealth Games.

It seems like a formality for Mead but, given the twists and turns that have happened in recent sporting events, it would be wrong to assume it is done and dusted.
