Manchester United want to complete a deal for Frenkie de Jong before embarking on their pre-season tour.
New boss Erik ten Hag is set to take his players to Asia and Australia in preparation for his first season in charge.
And the club hope to have added the Barcelona midfielder to their ranks in time for him to be involved.
De Jong is reportedly open to joining his former Ajax boss in the Premier League if a deal can be struck with the cash-strapped La Liga giants.
It's said Barca, who remain in financial dire straits, have rejected a €60million offer for the 25-year-old and are holding out for €85m, but that United are determined not to be used in order to relieve their money woes.
The clubs' respective positions suggest protracted negotiations are on the cards but The Mirror report United are hopeful a deal can be done before their summer preparations kick-off in earnest.
The first players are due back at their Carrington training base on June 27 ahead of a first pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Thailand.
And the club are aiming to have De Jong in place before that clash kicks off on July 12.
Reports from Spain also state United are eyeing up a deal for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres.
