When Edinburgh marked the moment The Queen became the longest-reigning British monarch

Following the sad and sudden death of Her Majesty on September 8, thousands of tributes have flooded in, each one holding a unique memory of how the loved monarch touched their lives.

One special moment for Scotland's capital city took place in Edinburgh Waverley Train Station when the Queen became the longest-reigning British monarch in history.

The Queen overtook the record set by her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria to become the nation's longest reigning sovereign on September 9, 2015, where she was greeted by delighted crowds at Edinburgh's Waverley Station as she stepped onto the polished steam locomotive Union of South Africa with Philip.

A City of Edinburgh Council representative shared the memory and wrote: "It is 7 years to the day since The Queen was in Edinburgh to open the Borders Railway line. On the same day, 9 September 2015, she became the longest-reigning British monarch in history."

At the time the Her Majesty thanked the nation for its kind messages on the day she became the longest reigning monarch in British history and when reflecting on the landmark record, the Queen admitted it was not a milestone she had ever aspired to.

The Monarch with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh at her side, spent the day travelling 40 miles on the railway with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, starting at Edinburgh's Waverley Station, stopping off at Newtongrange in Midlothian before carrying on to the Borders town of Tweedbank.

The Queen, the Duke and Ms Sturgeon travelled in a "Pegasus" Pullman coach that seats 14 in the main lounge area and also has a bar - that was serving tea and coffee.

The trio were seated in a pristine private compartment at the end of the coach's lounge area with the Queen's entourage in nearby seats. The royal party had left Edinburgh at 11:15 and stopped off for a walkabout in Newtongrange, where it was greeted by flag-waving crowds.

She was pictured smiling and waving as she looked out the window and spent the day meeting many members of the public across Edinburgh, Midlothian and the Borders.

Following a rare announcement on Thursday September 8 that doctors were "concerned" for the Queen's health, she was placed under medical supervision. Royal Family members rushed to join her at her side, including son King Charles III and grandson Prince William.

A statement from the Royal Family announcing the monarch's death read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
