Tech brand Apple plans to launch software updates for its iPhone, as well as its smartwatch, the Apple Watch, adding features and designs for compatible devices.

iOS 16 and watchOS 9 have some exciting changes, including a totally new lock screen, improved security, an unsend feature, revamped notifications, new watch faces, and more, reports The Guardian.

The iOS 16 is slated to launch today, September 12, after it was confirmed at the iPhone maker’s autumn event, the Film Developers’ conference in June.

But when will it come out, and what devices can we get it on? Here’s everything you need to know.

When does iOS 16 come out?

According to Apple, iOS 16 will be available on September 12, and the latest iPhone software comes out with a whole host of new features, that are set to be game-changing for your security and privacy.

Downloads for iOS and watchOS updates usually start at about 6pm UK time (1pm in New York). Unlike other manufacturers, all Apple devices will be able to download and install the update the moment it’s released, rather than in a staggered fashion. Updates for the iPad range will also be available later this year.

What are the key features of the update?

The key features of the new iOS 16 update are that it will offer unrivalled security and privacy.

At present, Apple’s security updates come alongside features updates and, fearing iPhone bugs, many Apple users are left to decide between security and functionality when a new iOS update comes out.

Now, there’s an iOS Rapid Security Response, which allows users to fix their security quickly and separately from general software updates, reports Forbes.

“Now your iPhone will get important security improvements between normal software updates, so you automatically stay up-to-date and protected against security issues,” says Apple.

1. Passkey updates

With the new update, Apple aims to obliterate the passkey and password, making it harder for you to become a victim of phishing scams or website leaks.

According to Apple, “Your private key is never kept on a web server, so you don’t have to worry about website leaks compromising your accounts.”

From iOS 16, you will be able to sign in to websites or apps on other devices, including non-Apple ones, with your saved passkey by scanning the QR code with your iPhone, or iPad, using Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate, reports Forbes.

2. Unsend messages

Apple fans have for a long time been asking for the chance to unsend messages and now, Apple has launched this feature.

With iOS 16, you can edit a message 16 minutes after sending it, and unsend a message up to two minutes after sending it, reports Forbes.

Up to five edits to a message will be allowed, but recipients will be able to see the amount of edits.

3. Lockdown mode

The idea of Apple’s Lockdown Mode is to allow you to lock down your iPhone so that it won’t be targetted by spyware.

Of the update, Apple says that it provides “extreme protection for the very small number of users who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security”.

4. Safety check

Safety Check is a privacy feature from iOS 16 aimed at those who might be at risk of an abusive or controlling partner.

Using the feature allows you to reset the access you’ve granted others to your device, change system privacy for apps, as well as restricting FaceTime and Messages to the device, reports Forbes.

Which devices can get iOS 16?

All of Apple’s smartphones, from 2017’s iPhone 8 or newer models, can install iOS16, and all Apple Watches from the 2018 Series 4 or newer can install WatchOS 9.

Will there be faster security updates?

Apple has decoupled its security updates from full iOS updates, reports The Guardian, which means it’s allowed to release bug fixes faster, as well as allowing them to automatically install on iPhones.

Face ID will also now work when the phone is held in a landscape orientation, reports Forbes.

How do I get iOS 16?

In order to get the new iOS 16 update, you need to open the Settings app on your iPhone, then navigate to General, before choosing Software Update.

Then, tap install if it’s available to download, verify, and then reboot in order to install it. You can also install the update via your MacBook, iTunes, or on Windows computer.

If you’re looking to update your WatchOS 9, that requires an iPhone 8 or a later model to be running iOS 16 before you start the update. Then, open the Watch app, and navigate to General, before selecting Software Update in order to start the installation.

In order to finish the update, you will need to replace your Apple Watch on its charger.

How much will iOS 16 cost?

The iOS 16 update is free and, if you’re being asked to pay, it is probably a scam.
