When Connor Goldson should've been moved on by Rangers

Connor Goldson should've been moved on sooner than he was by Rangers.

That's the view of former Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson.

The defender left Rangers in the summer, with Philippe Clement happy for the Englishman to move to Aris Limassol in Cyprus.

In a recent interview, Goldson spoke of his frustration that Rangers failed to kick on following their Scottish Premiership title triumph in 2021.

He went on to say that the club hasn't been the same since Steven Gerrard's departure for Aston Villa later that year.

Ferguson took issue with that in particular, as he pointed out that Giovanni van Bronckhorst guided the team to a Scottish Cup win in 2022, as well as the Europa League final.

He said on Go Radio's Football Show: "I don't like hearing that. I thought Gio [Van Bronckhorst] did a fine job. Rangers were maybe too quick in getting rid of Gio if I'm being honest.

"Steven Gerrard obviously brought the title back to the club, then moved on to Aston Villa and Gio come in and Gio had a style of play. I thought Gio done a fine job. He just had a few iffy results towards the end of his time at Rangers.

"At that time, Connor had signed a new contract, but personally, I thought it was the right time for Connor to go. I thought that he was a really good player for Rangers but it was time for him to move on.

"What I will say is that for the previous six years, he was one guy that did put his body on the line. I will give him that. I'm sure at times he says he could've played better but every time Connor Goldson gave you 100 per cent.

"When it came to the summer and he left, I just thought it was the right move for both Rangers and Connor."
