When and where you can see plane carrying Queen's coffin flying over Scotland today

The Queen's coffin is set to be flown across Scotland later today - and you may be able to spot it as it makes its final journey to London.

Thousands of well-wishers and mourners queued overnight to file past the Queen's coffin at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh after it was taken there during a poignant procession led by the new King. The coffin will remain in the Cathedral until 3pm before it is flown to the UK capital and stay overnight at Buckingham Palace before it will be moved to Westminster Hall to lie in state.

There are several routes the plane carrying Her Majesty could take as it departs from Edinburgh to London today. One involves the aircraft flying above over Brownhills towards Sutton Coldfield as it makes its way to the capital, BirminghamLive reports.

The second possible path would see the plane soaring above Leicester and down towards Northampton.

There is a chance Brits could track the progress of the aircraft on the app FlightRadar - although the flight number will be required to trace it.

There is no set flightpath between Edinburgh and London, and air traffic or weather may cause the plane to divert.

The Queen's coffin is being flow from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt in London ahead of a final vigil at Westminster Hall. The flight will be accompanied by the Queen's daughter, Princess Anne.

On his first flight down to London from Aberdeen airport on Friday, September 9, King Charles flew over West Northamptonshire.

He entered the county over Byfield, near Daventry, the plane flew over Woodford Halse, Canons Ashby, and Syresham, between Brackley and Silverstone.

On his flight up to Edinburgh, the King flew over central Northamptonshire. Flying over Castle Ashby and Grendon at around 11.45am, the plane crossed Earls Barton, Sywell, Mawsley, and near Rothwell before entering Leicestershire.

When could you see the flight?

The plane is expected to leave Edinburgh airport at around 6pm. The flight between Edinburgh and RAF Northolt is around 55 minutes.

So if Brits look up to the skies this evening, there is a chance they could witness the Queen on her last journey.

The Queen's coffin will be flown from Edinburgh Airport to London on an RAF Globemaster C-17 flight.

The King will be joined by Camilla as he receives his mother's coffin at Buckingham Palace, where she spent so many of her decades as sovereign.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will also be at Buckingham Palace.

King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort, will also tour Northern Ireland today as part of his Operation Spring Tide tour around the UK.

It comes as Brits paid their respects to the Queen as her coffin passed through the streets of Scotland before arriving at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh.
