When and where is the next World Cup after Argentina beat France in 2022 final

Lionel Messi finally got his hands on the World Cup trophy as Argentina beat France on penalties following a pulsating six-goal thriller. It was a tournament of thrills, spills and drama from the first minute until the last, but where and when will the next competition take place?

The United States, Canada and Mexico will be jointly hosting the 2026 World Cup after being edged out of hosting the 2022 tournament which took place in Qatar. The USA gave a good account of themselves in this recent competition but came up short against the Netherlands in the last-16.

With the likes of Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic and Giovanni Reyna out on the pitch, USMNT fans will have good reason to feel optimistic about their chances in four years time. Gregg Berhalter, the national team coach of the USA, would love to still be around for that spectacle.

Equally, Mexico and Canada will be looking to impress on their own patch. Neither made it out of the group stages in Qatar but both will be hoping to carry the momentum and euphoria of what comes with being a host nation.

Argentina will be hoping to become the first nation to lift back-to-back World Cup trophies since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. However, they might have to do it without the talismanic Lionel Messi, who would then be 39.

England, Germany, France and Spain will also have room for optimism, given the youthful nature of their squads. The Three Lions, in particular, will be finally hoping to shake off the curse of failing to win a major international trophy. Gareth Southgate will hope that he is still the man to try and make that happen.

The tournament is set to kick off on Monday 8 June, 2026, before drawing to a close on Friday 3 July.
