WhatsApp launches new 'hidden mode' to keep parts of your information a secret

WhatsApp is launching a new "hidden mode" to help you keep your personal information safe from those you don't want to see it.

The popular messaging app revealed the news on Twitter and said you'll now be able to hide your profile picture, Last Seen status, and About page from specific groups of people.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook and Instagram's parent company Meta, wrote in their tweet: "To further protect your privacy online, we’re rolling out new options to your privacy control settings.

"Now you can select who from your contact list can see your Profile Photo, About, and Last Seen status."

The feature will allow you to choose several privacy options for each setting, including making them visible for nobody, everyone, all of your contacts, or a selection of your choice.

That means you'll be able to make sure your family can see your Last Seen status, but that friend who won't stop bugging you will have no idea when you last used the app.

However, the setting does come with a catch - because if you stop someone from looking at your personal information, then you won't be able to see theirs either.

The feature is currently being rolled out on the general version of the app, so you'll need to check your Apple App Store or Google Play Store to see if you have an update available.

It comes as WhatsApp increased the number of people allowed in a group chat for some users.

The messaging application previously stated it is “slowly rolling out” the ability for group chats to now contain 512 people.

This is a five-fold increase on the 100 people previously allowed to chat on the app in a group previously.

Speaking on the change last month, WhatsApp stated: “One of the top requests we’ve consistently received is the option to add more people to a chat, so now we’re slowly rolling out the ability to add up to 512 people to a group.

“Building private, safe and secure communities takes works and we think this series of improvements will help people and groups stay close to one another.

“We hope people enjoy these updates and look forward to sharing more throughout the year.”
