WhatsApp finally lets you edit messages after they're sent - here's how

After months of waiting and hoping, WhatsApp is finally bringing the option to edit chats to its platform.

The meta-owned firm has just announced that all iPhone and Android users will soon to be able tweak what they've said, add emojis and fix typos after they punched the send button.

It's an important update that could end embarrassing texts or those nightmare messages you may wish you had never sent in the first place.

Although that's great news for WhatsApp's billions of users, there is one important caveat. You only have 15 minutes to make any changes.

WhatsApp edit message upgrade (WHATSAPP)

"For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages," WhatsApp said in a post on its blog. "From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats."

Once a chat has been tweaked, the recipient will know it's been changed thanks to a small message that says ‘edited’.

So how does it work and when will you get it?

Once the update arrives on your device, you simply need to long-press on a sent message and choose ‘Edit’ from the menu to begin changing things. Then just tap the send button again.

WhatsApp says this feature has started rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

Editable messages now join another new upgrade that was announced last week called Chat Lock.

This function hides chats in a secure folder with phone owners only able to read them once they have verified their identity via face recognition, fingerprint scanning or a pin code.

It basically means if someone else has hold of your phone they won't see anything that's been assigned to the Lock folder.

It also automatically hides the content of that chat in notifications, too so a private message won't suddenly be splashed all over the home screen.

Speaking about the Chat Lock upgrade, WhatsApp said: "We think this feature will be great for people who have reason to share their phones from time to time with a family member or those moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra special chat arrives."
