'Whatever your views, refugees and asylum seekers deserve our compassion'

As she waits for the verdict on her controversial Rwanda plan, Priti Patel has been busy elsewhere.

The Home Secretary has been found to have acted unlawfully. Of course, it’s around an asylum seeker case.

Conditions at a detention centre in Folkestone have been found to have breached the Equality Act.

Shameful, as always. The country is split on how to handle refugees and asylum seekers.

Hopefully, one day, we can reconcile. But in the meantime, there is one thing we should agree on – a basic right.

Many of the people who reach our shores are desperate, fleeing warzones, shattered countries and persecution.

And it’s a phenomenon that will only get worse.

Climate crises and fresh conflicts will all increase the flow of refugees.

Some are going to come illegally – it’s a fact. There are not enough legitimate routes.

How we treat these people says a lot about us as a country.

Take the case we bring you in today’s newspaper.

Kidane fled Eritrea at 18, first to Israel, where he was deported to Rwanda on a promise of safety.

It never came and he was forced out, so he set off on a dangerous journey, with murder and mayhem all around him.

Where was he heading? Here.

Where his only family – his brother – lives. Where he could be safe.

Now, because he arrived illegally, he faces deportation. Incredibly, back to Rwanda.

Languishing in a detention centre in Cardiff, he says: “We have been treated like cattle.”

Whatever your views, these are people. They deserve our compassion.
