Sometimes described as ‘chicken skin’ or ‘KP’, keratosis pilaris is extremely common, with studies suggesting that 40% of the population are affected. Except for itching in some circumstances, it’s also totally harmless – though many sufferers bemoan the rough texture and unsightly appearance.
What is it?
Keratosis pilaris is caused by the build-up of keratin, a protein found in our skin, hair and nails. When it builds up, it can form plugs in the opening of hair follicles, resulting in rough-feeling, raised bumps.
Who gets it?
The causes of KP are not fully understood but it is genetic in more than half those affected. It can also be worse in winter because of less moisture in the air.
How can I treat it?
Annette Luck, who had spent her life covering her own KP with long sleeves, decided to join forces with a UK skincare manufacturer to found Ameliorate, after discovering her children had developed the condition. The dermatological skincare brand was created especially to help treat keratosis pilaris, and has gone on to win an array of beauty awards.
For optimum results, Ameliorate advises a three-step routine. Start with exfoliation: the Smoothing Body Exfoliant (£17.50, buy now) uses Alpha Hydroxy Therapy and biodegradable bamboo granules to kickstart the process of unblocking your follicles, and the exfoliating body mitt can be used daily.
Then, it’s time to get cleansing. Ameliorate’s Nourishing Body Wash (£10.50, buy now) is a soap-free, PH-balanced product dedicated to enhancing the skin’s natural lipid barrier and maintaining moisture levels.
The third step is all about transformation. The best-selling lightweight Transforming Body Lotion (£22.50, buy now) contains AHA lactic acid and sweet almond oil to help smooth bumps and soften skin.
The Transforming Body Cream (£27.50, buy now) is a more intense treatment. It’s an emollient-rich formula which contains AHA lactic acid, omega oils, coconut and shea butters, alongside squalane.
Both provide moisturisation and help to progressively resurface the skin by exfoliating dead skin cells and encouraging the development of new ones. What's more, all Ameliorate’s products boast the ultra-moisturising LaH6 Skin Hydration Complex, comprised of six active moisturisers.
