What we know about the Fort Worth shooting that killed 3, wounded 8

A shooting after a Fourth of July festival in Forth Worth killed three people and wounded eight others late Monday night.

Here’s what we know about the shooting thus far.

Where and when did the shooting occur?

Gunfire erupted shortly before midnight as several hundred people gathered in the city’s historic Como neighborhood after the annual ComoFest, a Fourth of July celebration, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found multiple victims in a parking lot in the 3400 block of Horne Street, near Diaz Avenue.

How many people were shot?

Police said a total of 11 people were shot, including 10 adults and one juvenile.

Of the 11, three people have been pronounced dead. One was pronounced dead on scene, while two others died later.

Ka’Desha Weatherly confirmed her son, 18-year-old Paul Willis, was one of the victims killed. Family members told The Dallas Morning News Willis graduated from Arlington Heights High School, worked at McDonald’s and planned to study to become an electrician.

“He was a beautiful young man,” Weatherly said. “He did everything right. He did not deserve to die.”

A second victim was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office as 22-year-old Cynthia Quadalupe Santos. The identity of the third victim has not been released.

Have any arrests been made?

As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, no arrests have been made and a motive was unclear.

Police asked that anyone with information in connection with the shooting contact the department’s homicide unit at 817-392-4330 or Crime Stoppers.

“If anyone has personal videos during the time of the shooting or events leading up to the shooting they are asked to contact police,” the department said.

What is ComoFest?

ComoFest is the annual Fourth of July celebration for Fort Worth’s Como neighborhood, a historically Black community on the city’s west side.

Community members started ComoFest as an extension of the neighborhood’s Fourth of July parade, which has been a staple for more than 70 years.

In 2021, eight people were shot and wounded near a car wash following the inaugural ComoFest.
