What TV shows are coming to BBC, ITV and Channel 4 this autumn

It’s August and the TV schedules are full of sport, reality TV and a whole host of repeats. But soon, we’ll be into the autumn season, when the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 bring out the big guns to get us hooked in the run-up to Christmas.

As well as the annual heavyweights, such as Strictly, Great British Bake off and Doctor Who, great drama will once more have us binge-watching (and no doubt fast-forwarding thought the ads).

No dates and times are yet available for these new series, but many will kick off in September just as the nights start to draw in. It’s an all star line-up, with the traditional TV channels doing all they can to fight off the streaming services such as Netflix.

Here is just a flavour of what will hit our screens this autumn:

Autumn on the BBC

Doctor Who (BBC1)

Jodie Whittaker will make her final appearance in a feature-length Doctor Who story that will see 1980s companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Aldred) making a return. Rumoured to be scheduled for October, it will pave the way for the next doctor, Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa's.

Strictly (BBC1)

The contestants are already being revealed one by one. Already, we have seven celebs confirmed, with pop icon Matt Goss the latest to be announced.

Industry (BBC1)

Harry Lawtey returns as London banker Robert Spearing for a second series. It’s a no-holds-barred look at the world of high finance.

Crossfire (BBC1)

Crossfire is set in a luxury resort in the Canaries. The three-part thriller stars Keeley Hawes, who is dragged into a murder mystery.

Inside Man (BBC1)

David Tennant, Dolly Wells and Lydia West star in this clever thriller. Written by Steven Moffat, it also has Hollywood star Stanley Tucci taking a lead role.

Autumn on ITV

The Suspect (ITV)

Poldark's Aidan Turner stars as clinical psychologist, who goes from hero to murder suspect in this five-part thriller. Also stars Shaun Parkes and Sian Clifford.

Doc Martin (ITV)

For the tenth and final series, we return to the fictional Cornish village of Portwenn. Martin Clunes is Dr Martin Ellingham, alongside Caroline Catz as his wife Louisa.

Ridley (ITV)

Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar stars in this four-part crime drama, playing charismatic retired detective Alex Ridley. Ridley works as a police consultant to crack the toughest cases.

The Larkins (ITV)

Gentle Sunday night fare, with Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan as Pop and Ma Larkin. The great locations will have you longing for summer to return already.

Autumn on Channel 4

Jamie’s One-Pan Wonders (C4)

Jamie Oliver gives us perfect culinary solutions for our busy lives. He’ll return to Channel 4 in 2023 with Jamie’s Seasons.

Great British Bake Off 2022 (C4)

In 2021, Bake Off started on September 21, so look for a similar start date this year. We all love the collapsing cakes and other kitchen disasters.
