What Troy Parrott has said about Russell Martin, Tottenham's plan for him and why Swansea City are well placed

One win in five doesn't sound too good in the cold light of day, but with a World Cup spot secured, it's difficult to paint this international window as anything other than a success for Wales.

The schedule's been gruelling, but Rob Page's side have more than held their own against some top teams, and will now ride into a well deserved summer break on something of a high.

But they're not the only ones who might feel like they've enjoyed a reasonably successful couple of weeks.

After missing out on qualification for Qatar, the Republic of Ireland have offered a glimpse into a potentially refreshing future. Yes, there were defeats to Armenia and Ukraine, but a crushing 3-0 win over Scotland, and a spirited 1-1 draw in the return clash with the Ukrainians, has given Irish football a healthy and much-needed dose of optimism.

At the heart of their win on Saturday was Swansea City's Michael Obafemi, who understandably hit the headlines with an absolute thunderbolt of a goal, but his strike partner Troy Parrott picked up plenty of plaudits too, with a goal and an assist capping a highly accomplished performance of his own.

It's just the latest positive chapter for the Tottenham Hotspur youngster, who enjoyed a fine season on loan at MK Dons, scoring 10 goals and laying on seven assists in 47 matches as his side marched to the League One play-offs. It's a record that has left him heavily tipped for a bright future in north London, and indeed in the green of his country.

None of that that will come as any surprise to Russell Martin - the man responsible for bringing him on board at MK last summer.

Martin never really got to work with the youngster, departing for south Wales shortly after the loan move was confirmed. Now, it appears he could get another chance. Parrott is one of a number of names believed to be on the radar in SA1 right now, with Antonio Conte seemingly likely to ship the youngster out on loan once more.

According to reports in the English capital, Spurs are looking at putting a plan in place they hope will allow Parrott to make a breakthrough for their first team in 2023/24.

Capable of playing as a striker or a number 10, Spurs insiders have already made comparisons between the 20-year-old and current superstar Harry Kane, and both parties believe that another spell away, at the right club, could be further beneficial to his development.

There's likely to be plenty of interest in taking him on. Middlesbrough, Preston and QPR have already been linked, but Swansea might well consider themselves well placed should they decide to firm up their interest, with Martin's brand of football winning favour with Spurs in the past.

After snapping up Parrott last time, Martin told mkdons.com : “Troy is somebody we have had our eyes on for a while so we are delighted to be able to work with him. There was a lot of interest in him so we are thankful to Spurs for trusting us with his development, but also to Troy for his commitment and desire to be here. We are excited to see what he can do for us this season.”

Tottenham, of course, have a new boss now, so Martin's winning pitch might have to be fine-tuned were he to be trusted to take him on again. But for what it's worth, the former Millwall loanee appears to have a pretty favourable opinion of Martin's brand of football.

After signing on the dotted line at MK, he revealed: “Russ has wanted me to come here previously but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened. He’s made it known that he wants me, which is a good feeling to have. I’m just happy to be here now and I can’t wait to get going.

“I hope to bring goals to the team, of course, but I also want to contribute by linking play and getting on the ball as much as possible. I saw last night how good the team is at creating chances and, as a striker, I can’t wait!”

Parrott will arguably know exactly what he's getting under Martin, and the chance to play under a manager who clearly rates what he brings to the table will surely be an attractive proposition, particularly at what is an important time in his development.

After all, player himself has big ambitions for the future.

"I've had the dream of playing for Spurs since I was 14 and I first started going over there," he told The Athletic recently.

"I’ve always said that I want to play there, I want to play in that team. Nothing’s changed at this point. That’s still the goal."

Martin will feel he's well placed to help Parrott on that pathway, but it remains to be seen whether a reunion will really materialise.

It seems likely at this stage that Martin may have to play something of a waiting game if he decides to pursue the Irishman, with Spurs boss Conte tipped to take a closer look at the forward over the pre-season period.

There's even a chance Parrott might be included as part of the club's plans for their tour of Korea. Patience might well be required, but Martin may well feel he's a player worth waiting for.

Then again, a move for Parrott would likely open up other questions.

For instance, the comparisons with Kane come from Parrott's ability to play in a deep-lying striker role. "I like to drop deep and get involved in the game. There’s a balance though of trying to keep the centre-backs pinned back so our No.10s can get on the ball," he recently explained.

It's a role Joel Piroe has often occupied with great success under Martin, and questions over the Dutchman's future will likely only intensify should the pursuit for Parrott go up a notch, particularly given the Ireland international's impressive partnership with Obafemi. Whether we're looking at a potential Piroe replacement or merely someone to help complement Martin's current options clearly remains to be seen.
