What Trey McBride did in community to earn Walter Payton Man of the Year from Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals named tight end Trey McBride their 2024 honoree as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. He is one of 32 players selected by all NFL teams for the honor.

It is an award that recognizes both excellence as a player on the field and also in the community.

What has McBride done?

This is what the Cardinals released in the announcement of McBride’s award.

McBride had seen great success on the field and in the community this year. Last month, he participated in the team’s 22nd annual Feed the Hungry event which provided Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of Arizonans who are escaping homelessness, addiction and poverty. On October 15, McBride was also part of a Salute to Service STEM event at Tillman Middle School where he taught students about inertia and gravity through the lens of film study.

He has also contributed to the Cardinals’ ongoing pursuit to grow the game of girls flag football. In June, McBride hosted and helped instruct approximately 100 girls from four Arizona high school girls flag football programs during a series of agility drills and competition periods. In September, he had the honor of conducting the coin toss for the first-ever Cardinals Girls High School Flag Football Game of the Week that aired live across the state on Arizona’s Family Sports.

During the offseason, McBride stayed engaged in the community. In July, he returned to his hometown of Fort Morgan, CO to host his second annual free youth camp. Through the yearly camp, McBride provides mentorship and skills training to his hometown’s next generation of players. In March, he hosted the team’s eighth annual “Tackle Reading Day” where he read and donated books to over 650 underserved Valley elementary school students.

McBride also went to Poland on an NFL-USO tour in March. The trip spanned four days, visiting six different military bases and hundreds of troops. There he observed military equipment demonstrations, participated in an Army combat fitness test, and took part in a Madden gaming tournament – all while conducting meet and greets and sharing meals with service members. A special moment on the trip came when McBride met with service members from the Arizona National Guard, who were all die-hard Cardinals fans.

During McBride’s breakout season in 2023, he made a big impact on others. Last December, he hosted “A Catch For The Holidays,” where 10 students from Bernard Black Elementary School in Phoenix were treated to a shopping spree at SCHEELS. Each child received a $1,000 gift card courtesy of McBride to spend at the store. He was joined by a dozen of his Cardinals teammates at the event, making it a truly memorable moment for all the students. In November of 2023, McBride attended the Annual Teen Thanksgiving Dinner at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale. He first spoke to the group and then served Thanksgiving dinner before breaking bread with the group of underserved teens.

McBride took part in a night of equine therapy and fun with 30 survivors from the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) in November of 2023 as part of the NFL’s Salute to Service initiative. At the event he helped the survivors ride and groom horses before enjoying a meal together. In September of 2023, McBride attended a Phoenix Children’s Hospital Birthday Party where he played games and enjoyed desserts with patients in celebration of their birthdays. The visit to Phoenix Children’s was McBride’s second in a three-month span as he made bedside visits with pediatric patients that June. McBride consistently and proudly represents the Cardinals at a wide variety of events.

Here are some photos of his community work that the team released.
