What Todd Boehly was spotted doing as Chelsea complete £9.7m Joao Felix loan transfer

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has flown back to his home nation of the USA to attend Hollywood's Golden Globes - as Chelsea continue their work in the transfer market.

The Blues announced the signing of Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Portugal international joins on loan until the end of the season with Chelsea reportedly paying a fee of £9.7million.

Felix travelled to London for his medical on Tuesday after Chelsea agreed terms with Atletico, who paid £113million for the 23-year-old from Benfica in 2019. “Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives, so I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge,” he said.

Boehly, who also owns MLB side Los Angeles Dodgers, spent £270million in the summer on the likes of Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and more as Chelsea aimed for a fresh start after the Roman Abramovich era. Things haven't quite gone to plan - Thomas Tuchel was sacked just a month into the new season, Graham Potter was brought in as his replacement and Chelsea are 10th in the Premier League with a long injury list.

There has been a shake-up of the backroom team to help Boehly, who was until recently operating as the club's sporting director as well as chairman. Christopher Vivell is the new technical director overseeing recruitment with help from Paul Winstanley club's director of global talent and transfers.

While Chelsea were finalising a deal for Felix, Boehly was seen hitting the red carpet at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, California. Boehly's company Eldridge Industries owns the prestigious film and TV awards, which were held for the 80th year in a row.

Felix is Chelsea’s fourth signing of the January window, following the permanent arrivals of Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos. Potter's side return to Premier League action against Fulham on Thursday.
